Investment Strategies in a Volatile Crypto Market: Tips for Success

<h1>Iment Strategies in a Volatile Crypto Market: Tips for Success</h1>
<p>The cryptocurrency market is infamous for its volatility, offering both thrilling opportunities and significant risks. Investors constantly seek effective strategies to navigate this fast-paced environment. Here are some essential tips for success when investing in cryptocurrencies.</p>
<h2>1. Do Your Own Research (DYOR)</h2>
<p>Before investing in any cryptocurrency, it's crucial to conduct thorough research. Understand the project's fundamentals, team, use cases, and market potential. Reliable sources include:</p>
<ul>
    <li>Whitepapers</li>
    <li>Project websites</li>
    <li>News articles and analysis</li>
<li>Community discussions on platforms like Reddit and Telegram</li>
</ul>
<h2>2. Diversify Your Portfolio</h2>
<p>Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Diversifying your investments across various cryptocurrencies can help mitigate risks. Consider holding a mix of:</p>
<ul>
    <li>Established cryptocurrencies (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum)</li>
    <li>Emerging altcoins</li>
    <li>Stablecoins for liquidity</li>
</ul>
<h2>3. Use Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA)</h2>
<p>Dollar-cost averaging is an investment strategy where you invest a fixed amount of money at regular intervals, regardless of the asset's price. This approach reduces the impact of volatility, allowing you to accumulate coins at different price points over time.</p>
<h2>4. Set Clear Goals</h2>
<p>Define your investment goals before entering the market. Are you looking for short-term gains, long-term holding, or a specific return on investment? Setting clear goals helps you make informed decisions and resist emotional trading.</p>
<h2>5. Stay Updated and Adapt</h2>
<p>The crypto market evolves rapidly, influenced by news, regulations, and technological developments. Stay informed by following industry news and trends. Be ready to adapt your strategy based on changing market conditions.</p>
<h2>6. Use Risk Management Techniques</h2>
<p>Always employ risk management strategies to protect your investments. Consider using techniques such as:</p>
<ul>
    <li>Setting stop-loss orders</li>
<li>Limiting your investment to a percentage of your total capital</li>
    <li>Avoiding emotional trades</li>
</ul>
<h2>7. Be Prepared for Volatility</h2>
<p>Cryptocurrencies can experience extreme price swings within short periods. Understand that volatility is a part of the crypto landscape. Prepare mentally for fluctuations and avoid panic selling during downturns.</p>
<h2>8. Consider Security First</h2>
<p>Protecting your investments is paramount. Use reputable exchanges, enable two-factor authentication, and consider using hardware wallets for long-term storage. Always be cautious of phishing attacks and scams.</p>

Teen Altercation Escalates to Shooting at Park Place Mall

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – A fight between teen boys led to a shooting at Park Place Mall in Tucson on Wednesday, March 18.

The TPD said it happened near the food court and children’s playground around 7 p.m., when the mall was packed with shoppers and workers.

“We are extremely fortunate that no innocent bystanders were injured,” the TPD said in a release Thursday.

Several videos of the shooting were posted on social media, and you can watch one of them below.

Brianna Smeltzer-Mannett told 13 News that she was at Victoria’s Secret when she heard several gunshots.

“Really quickly, I was like, yeah, those are gunshots,” Smeltzer-Mannett said. “If I had walked out of that store probably a minute earlier, I probably would have seen it right in front of my eyes.”

Smeltzer-Mannett said she went behind a counter at the store to hide with nearly a dozen women.

“We were all just really quiet, and I was just praying to God that we were all just protected,” she said.

While the mall was back open on Thursday, the shooting was still top of mind for many.

“It definitely makes me feel unsafe,” said Damian Corrales. “I feel like the lack of security that I’ve personally seen here at the mall has been very abundant.”

Corrales said he was shocked that it happened with so many people around.

“In all honesty, it’s really nerve-wracking,” he said. “It’s scary to think that in a public place like this, where lots of people gather, a tragedy like this just happens to take hold.”

The TPD said some off-duty officers were working at the mall and responded to secure the scene.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call 88-CRIME or go to www.88CRIME.org.

“We also want to recognize and thank mall security personnel and employees for their swift actions in helping facilitate the evacuation and directing shoppers to safety,” the TPD said. “Their response contributed to a quick and orderly clearing of the area.”

It is Spring Break, and 13 News was told by people outside the mall that it was packed at the time of the shooting.

One mall worker, who did not want to be identified, said they hid in the back of their store for more than 90 minutes. They said other employees came into their store after hearing six to seven shots.

“I was trying not to break down and run out the door or go hysterical because it was pretty nerve-racking when you don’t know what’s going on,” the worker said.

GROWING CONCERNS ABOUT VIOLENT CRIME

13 News spoke with local leaders and residents about the recent shootings and growing safety concerns.

“It’s very scary,” said Monica Carlson with the Tucson Crime Free Coalition. “For one, when people are scared to come out of their homes at night because of this kind of crime, there’s a huge problem.”

Many of the recent shootings have involved teens, something that concerns Carlson even more.

“It’s heartbreaking,” she said. “I have children, I’ve, you know, at home, and it’s heartbreaking. And yes, we’re definitely being notified of a lot more crime.”

Tucson Mayor Regina Romero said the city saw a 14% drop in homicides last year, but Carlson believes gun violence isn’t going down at the same rate.

“I do not believe crime is down,” Carlson said. “A lot of crime is going unreported right now in the city of Tucson, because people are not reaching out, because there’s no response from police officers.”

So the question is, what can be done?

Tucson Police Officers Association President Darrell Hussman said when multiple crimes happen in a similar area, they can send out extra patrols to monitor the area.

“If there’s a hot spot, we have a lot of programs that see where crime is concentrated,” Hussman said. “We have units that will go out just to make sure. Was it a coincidence that they happened so close together, or is there something there?”

But that response is reactive, and Carlson believes more proactive measures need to be taken by city leaders.

“Mayor and council need to get very serious about community safety and budgeting for the Tucson Police Department,” she said. “When there’s more police on the streets, the crime is down.”

Earlier Wednesday, Romero held an event with local and national violence prevention organizations.

Romero said more police are not always the answer.

“There have been beliefs that our police officers are the cure-all for community safety,” she said. “That is absolutely not true. They’re an important piece of it, but the work that you all are doing is equally important.”

Romero emphasized the importance of advocacy, more funding, and community prevention messaging.

Hussman said that is a key part of what police and the community can do now to curb the violence.

“Then, it’s just having that education, not only from the department and the community, but even parents need to have those hard communication and conversations with their children about when to walk away,” he said.

13 News has reported on three other shootings involving multiple victims in Tucson over the last six days.

Are the Lakers the NBA’s Hottest Team Right Now?

Welcome back to this week’s Lakers newsletter, where we are fully scoreboard watching.

The Lakers have 14 games left and are surging up the Western Conference standings. With six consecutive wins and nine in their last 10, the Lakers (43-25) are third in the West and suddenly have a 1.5-game lead on fourth-place Houston.

The team that couldn’t beat anyone good suddenly has statement wins over four teams with .600 records. The turnaround from fighting to stay out of the play-in to now being in position for homecourt advantage left even JJ Redick struggling to find the right description.

“Is coalesce a word?” Redick said after the Lakers outlasted the Denver Nugget in overtime on Saturday. “Is that the right word? For coming together? Jelling? I think it feels like we’re coalescing right now in a really nice way.”

All things Lakers, all the time.

Get all the Lakers news you need in Thuc Nhi Nguyen’s weekly newsletter.

Lakers’ ‘Big Three’ finds its pecking order

The defining moment of LeBron James’ performance during the Lakers’ game of the season officially went down as a turnover.

His Superman dive to save a loose ball with 54.3 seconds left in regulation against Denver on Saturday turned into one of James’ five turnovers because the Lakers did not corral the jump ball. But the statistical and physical sacrifice of the play showed the type of role James will play on this team coming down the stretch of the season.

“It’s a great example of leadership,” Redick said. “Leadership is not just the voice who’s talking. Leadership is then what you do on the court, and if you want to be a winning team then you need guys who are willing to take the lead and make winning plays.”

With Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves starring, Redick acknowledged that “the best thing for our team is [James] being the third highest-used player.” Since returning from hip and elbow injuries that kept him out of three games, James has had the third-highest usage rate on the team in each of the last three games. All were wins.

Redick acknowledged that “finding the groove” between James, Doncic and Reaves has been “the challenge for all of them, not just LeBron, all season.” It was more difficult because alternating injuries limited the trio’s time together on the court.

The season-long advanced metrics have favored having just Doncic and Reaves on the court, who have a plus-eight net rating together, as opposed to all three (plus-3.2 net rating). But the modest rating of the Doncic, Reaves and James combination has taken dramatic leaps this week alone.

James, Doncic and Reaves outscored opponents by 32.7 points per 100 possessions in wins against the Bulls and Nuggets.

The Lakers have gotten their “best win of the season” four times in the last nine days. Two were without James when the Lakers blew out the Knicks and the Timberwolves. He returned and the wins got grittier: an overtime thriller against Denver and Monday’s tense victory in Houston.

Other teammates made the flashy, standout plays. Doncic nailed the game-winning basket in overtime against Denver, and Reaves forced extra time with a one-in-a-hundred intentionally missed free throw. Deandre Ayton had four consecutive points late in the fourth quarter against Houston that put the Rockets away.

The NBA’s all-time leading scorer, meanwhile, has been a relatively quiet seven-for-13 from the field in each of the last three games, scoring no more than 18 points. He doesn’t mind as long as it adds up to wins.

“If it benefits others, it benefits the team,” James said last week. “The team is most important.”

It won’t count in the stat sheet, but watching James fly across the floor at 41 years old against Denver was “one of the biggest plays of the game,” Reaves said Saturday. Redick joked that after 23 NBA seasons and three years of high school he had never seen James lay out for a loose ball like that.

Because he never had, James replied.

And after sharing a photo on social media of a bright red court burn the size of a nickel, James might never do it again.

“Might be it for diving for the year!” James wrote in an Instagram story showing the wound. “Ouch! Lol!”

Deandre Ayton arrives just in time

(Ethan Swope / Associated Press)

Nearly 10 years before teaming up for the Lakers, Rui Hachimura and Deandre Ayton were just teenaged prospects with big dreams. They first met at a Basketball without Borders camp in 2016. The roster that year also included future NBA champions Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Isaiah Hartenstein. Hachimura recalled Ayton dominating everyone. Then the 7-foot center from the Bahamas inexplicably disappeared.

“That’s what I remember,” Hachimura said with a smile remembering his first impression of his future Lakers teammate. “I was like, ‘Where’s this guy going?’”

When Hachimura shared that anecdote in October, it was an unintentionally fitting description of Ayton’s career. Over the last eight years, the former No. 1 pick has dominated and disappeared in equal measure.

Just in time for the Lakers’ biggest games of the year, the enigmatic center returned to his “DominAyton” mode.

Ayton averaged 13 points and 9.8 rebounds per game in wins over the Knicks, Timberwolves, Bulls and Nuggets after coming back from a one-game injury absence. When Jaxson Hayes and Maxi Kleber were sidelined for games against Minnesota and Chicago, Ayton starred with back-to-back double-doubles.

“Felt like I picked up my energy and my focus,” Ayton said. “I finally caught up with the team.”

One of the surest signs of Ayton’s engagement is his activity on the boards. The Lakers are 29-7 when Ayton has eight or more rebounds and 8-14 when he has seven or fewer. Lately he has been especially clutch with three rebounds and four points in overtime against Denver and five rebounds with six points in the fourth quarter against Houston when the Lakers finished the game on a 13-4 run.

“He is an X factor for us, if not the X Factor,” Redick said after Ayton scored 23 points with 10 rebounds against the Bulls, “because him playing at a high level raises our ceiling. It changes the makeup of our team.”

Ayton had his son Deandre Ayton Jr. in the locker room after that performance against the Bulls. The five-year-old bounced a white rubber ball on the ground while waiting for his dad to finish showering then joined him at his locker for his media obligations. After the game when the Lakers celebrated “Girl Dad Night,” this proud boy dad left a lasting impression.

“Truly a blessing,” Ayton said of having his son join him at the game, “especially being a Laker. Just hope he [is] inspired.”

On tap

Wednesday at Rockets (41-26), 6:30 p.m.

This game will decide the head-to-head tiebreaker between Houston and L.A. In the tight conference race, the Lakers already own head-to-head tiebreakers against Denver and Minnesota, but not against Phoenix, which is lurking in the seventh spot with a 39-29 record, four games behind the Lakers.

Thursday at Heat (38-30), 5 p.m.

The Heat were one of the hottest teams in the East before losing to the Orlando Magic on Saturday in Norman Powell’s return from injury. Powell came off the bench after missing seven games because of a groin injury and scored 20 points. The Heat were 7-0 during the stretch without Powell, even playing without Tyler Herro for two games.

Saturday at Magic (38-29), 4 p.m.

The Magic’s seven-game winning streak came to an end Monday in Atlanta. Franz Wagner (ankle) has played in just four games since Dec. 7, and Paolo Banchero is averaging 24.8 points on 51.4% shooting, 9.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists during the month of March.

Monday at Detroit (48-19), 4 p.m.

The Pistons are cruising toward the top seed in the East. Cade Cunningham has continued his breakthrough year with 24.9 points and 10.1 assists per game.

Status report

Maxi Kleber (lumbar back strain)

The backup big man has missed four games because of a back injury that started earlier this season and recently flared up against. Kleber has good days and bad days, Redick said, and has been shut down for five days. He did not travel to Houston for the beginning of the six-game trip, but the Lakers hope he can join.

Made possible only through teamwork with my favorite coworker Brad Turner, I did the impossible: I had two uninterrupted weeks at home during the NBA season. After coming home from a month overseas, I needed that time to settle back into my normal life, including my kitchen. I missed it. We kept it low-key for the homecoming with Korean short ribs (galbi) with rice and Vietnamese pickled carrots and daikon radish. Green onions for garnish because my mom would never let a dish touch the table if it wasn’t garnished.

Digital Gold or Environmental Risk? The Double-Edged Sword of Cryptocurrencies

Introduction

The rise of cryptocurrencies has ignited a global financial revolution, yet it has also brought significant environmental concerns to the forefront. This article explores the dual nature of cryptocurrencies as both a technological marvel and an ecological burden.

The Energy Consumption Dilemma

Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin utilize a process known as proof of work (PoW), which requires substantial computational power. This process typically involves large mining farms that consume vast amounts of electricity, leading to comparisons with the energy usage of entire countries.

Carbon Footprint

The majority of cryptocurrency mining operations are powered by non-renewable energy sources, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. A significant portion of Bitcoin mining occurs in regions reliant on coal power, exacerbating climate change.

Positive Aspects: A Shift to Renewable Energy

On the other hand, the cryptocurrency industry is becoming increasingly aware of its environmental impact. Many mining companies are transitioning to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. This shift not only mitigates environmental damage but also promotes sustainability within the industry.

Innovations and Efficiency

Developments in technology, such as proof of stake (PoS) mechanisms and more efficient mining algorithms, aim to reduce the overall energy consumption associated with cryptocurrencies. Projects like Ethereum are leading the way in this regard, promising a 99% reduction in energy usage with their migration to PoS.

The Social Implications

The environmental repercussions of cryptocurrencies also intersect with social issues. Communities impacted by pollution from mining operations often bear the brunt of the environmental costs. Moreover, the disparity in energy resources can exacerbate inequality, with wealthier nations potentially benefiting more from cryptocurrency due to better access to clean energy technologies.

Conclusion: Navigating the Future

As cryptocurrencies continue to evolve, it is crucial to strike a balance between their financial benefits and environmental responsibilities. Stakeholders, including developers, miners, and users, must prioritize sustainable practices to ensure that digital currencies can contribute positively to society without jeopardizing the planet.

A Wisconsin Basketball Perspective

We are just one day away from the start of March Madness, as the No. 5 seed Wisconsin Badgers will take on the No. 12 seed High Point Panthers in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, with tip-off slated for 12:50 p.m. CT.

The Badgers are riding hot heading into the tournament, thanks to strong final six games, where they went 5-1 with wins over the Washington Huskies (2x), Purdue Boilermakers, and Illinois Fighting Illini. The lone loss came against the Michigan Wolverines, a top-three team in the country and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, by three points on a buzzer beater.

A big part of the success has been the dominance of Nick Boyd and John Blackwell, who have fueled the Badgers this season en route to being one of the best backcourts in college basketball.

Boyd, who was a second-team All-Big Ten selection, averaged 20.6 points and 4.2 assists this season for the Badgers, while Blackwell, a third-team All-Big Ten selection, averaged 19.0 points and 4.9 rebounds a game.

Both players set career highs in points during the Big Ten Tournament, and will be the keys for the Badgers if they make a run in the NCAA Tournament over the next few weeks.

Heading into March Madness, where do Boyd and Blackwell rank amongst the top players still playing?

ESPN’s Jeff Borzello and Myron Medcalf ranked the Top 50 players in March Madness, slotting Boyd in at No. 20.

“Boyd has surged up this list in recent weeks, as the San Diego State transfer is operating at an incredibly high level on the offensive end down the stretch of the season,” Borzello wrote. “He had a fantastic performance against Illinois in the Big Ten tournament, scoring 38 points and dishing out six assists, and has scored at least 20 points in 15 of 21 games since the calendar turned to 2026. In Big Ten play, Boyd ranks fourth in scoring and 10th in assists, averaging 20.6 points for the season.”

Boyd ranks only behind Jeremy Fears Jr., Keaton Wagler, Braden Smith, and Yaxel Lendeborg among Big Ten players on the list.

John Blackwell, on the other hand, was not among the Top 50 of ESPN’s list, instead being named as an Honorable Mention.

But, if Wisconsin is going to make a run in March, they’re going to need both Boyd and Blackwell to continue performing at a high level, just as they did in the Big Ten Tournament.

A Thrilling Showdown on the Court

There are several interesting WTA matches scheduled for the second day in Miami. Paula Badosa, Caty McNally, and Sara Bejlek will be among those who take to the court. As always, we at LWOT predict all the action, including Sloane Stephens vs Jennifer Brady and Venus Williams vs Francesca Jones, in our articles, but which players do you think will win?

WTA Miami Day 2 Predictions

Ashlyn Krueger vs Dayana Yastremska

Head-to-head: First meeting

Neither woman will take a backward step in this match because of their aggressive styles. The lively conditions in Miami mean a high number of winners and unforced errors can be expected. This could go either way, but Krueger is narrowly favored. Yastremska usually performs best against opponents who give her time, and the American will not.
Prediction: Krueger in 3

Caty McNally vs Rebeka Masarova

Head-to-head: First meeting

McNally has only managed one main draw victory in her three previous tournaments during the North American swing. That will likely give Masarova hope of upsetting the home favorite. However, the Swiss player’s game is not suited to handling variety. McNally has that in abundance, making her the most likely winner.
Prediction: McNally in 2

Sara Bejlek vs Talia Gibson

Head-to-head: Gibson 1-0 Bejlek

Both young stars have generated attention this season. Bejlek secured the Abu Dhabi Open title, while Gibson was a quarterfinalist in Indian Wells. This will be just Bejlek’s second match since her run to a maiden WTA title. Against someone as consistent in the rallies as Gibson, who has already played twice in qualifying, I think that will prove decisive.
Prediction: Gibson in 2

Paula Badosa vs Aliaksandra Sasnovich

Head-to-head: Sasnovich 2-1 Badosa

A few weeks ago, Sasnovich overcame Badosa in Abu Dhabi. The Spaniard has endured a challenging start to 2026, and her repeated fitness issues mean there is always uncertainty surrounding her. Reaching the semifinal of a 125K in Austin last week offered some encouragement, though. The conditions for this encounter should suit the Spaniard more than Sasnovich, and she is backed to win this time.
Prediction: Badosa in 2

The Intersection of Art, Ownership, and Blockchain

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have taken the art world by storm, drawing significant attention from collectors, artists, and investors alike. But what exactly are NFTs, and what does their rise mean for the future of art and ownership? This article explores the fundamentals of NFTs, their implications for the art market, and how they utilize blockchain technology.

    <h2>What are NFTs?</h2>
<p>NFTs are unique digital tokens created using blockchain technology, which certifies the ownership and authenticity of a digital asset. Unlike cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, which are interchangeable (fungible), each NFT has distinct properties that make it unique and not interchangeable with other tokens.</p>
<h2>The Role of Blockchain Technology</h2>
<p>Blockchain technology is a decentralized digital ledger that records all transactions across a network. In the context of NFTs, blockchain serves as a public proof of ownership and transaction history, thus ensuring transparency and security. This means that anyone can verify the authenticity of a digital asset and trace its ownership back to its creator.</p>
<h3>Benefits of NFTs</h3>
    <ul>
<li><strong>Provenance:</strong> NFTs provide an unchangeable record of ownership, allowing artists to prove the authenticity of their work.</li>
<li><strong>Artist Royalties:</strong> Many NFT platforms allow artists to earn royalties on secondary sales, benefiting creators long after the initial sale.</li>
<li><strong>Access to New Markets:</strong> NFTs enable artists to reach international collectors directly, bypassing traditional galleries and auction houses.</li>
    </ul>
<h2>Art and Ownership Redefined</h2>
<p>The advent of NFTs is redefining the traditional concepts of art ownership and value. With digital art becoming increasingly popular, NFTs allow artists to create exclusive versions of their work, ensuring scarcity in a digital environment where copies are easily made. Collectors can now own a piece of digital art, much like owning a painting or sculpture.</p>
<h3>The Impact on Artists</h3>
<p>For artists, NFTs provide a new revenue stream and the opportunity to connect directly with their audience. They can leverage social media platforms to promote their work, making it easier for collectors to discover and purchase their art. This democratization of the art market is empowering more creators, leading to a vibrant and diverse ecosystem.</p>
<h3>The Challenges Ahead</h3>
<p>Despite the excitement surrounding NFTs, challenges remain. Environmental concerns related to the energy consumption of blockchain networks, market volatility, and the potential for copyright infringement are just a few issues that need to be addressed. Additionally, as the market becomes more crowded, artists face increased competition, making it essential for them to develop unique offerings and marketing strategies.</p>
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
<p>NFTs represent a transformative shift in how art is created, owned, and valued. By harnessing the power of blockchain technology, artists and collectors can engage in a more innovative and transparent way. As we move forward, the continued evolution of NFTs will undoubtedly shape the landscape of the art world, presenting both new opportunities and challenges.</p>

BYU’s Impact on Modern College Basketball

PROVO, Utah — AJ Dybantsa’s smiling face greets visitors to the bookstore inside BYU’s Wilkinson Student Center directly in the heart of campus.

Stacks of cream-colored T-shirts for sale feature his countenance, along with the No. 3 the freshman sensation wears for the Cougars, his scribbled AJ autograph — and five small stars. Underneath, there’s a quote from when the nation’s No. 1 recruit shook up the college basketball world in December 2024 by declaring on ESPN, “It’s just for the bigger picture,” going on to commit to a program unused to accumulating generational talent.

Less than a year and a half later, as Dybantsa enters what will be his one and only experience with March Madness, those words serve as an echo for the player and the program in the middle of trying to assimilate into the established elites of the sport.

Dybantsa is the highest-profile proof of the new level of ambition at BYU, which is owned and subsidized by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The athletic department has leaned into the era of name, image and likeness and revenue sharing, challenging assumptions about BYU’s limitations while also having to reconcile the mission of the LDS Church with spending big to win.

“I think BYU’s always wanted to be able to prove they can play with the big boys,” said BYU coach Kevin Young.

Landing Dybantsa from his hometown of Brockton, Mass., gave the Cougars a shot. Reports of Dybantsa’s single-year NIL compensation have oscillated from $4 million to $6 million, believed to be among the top paydays for a player to date. While Young declined to identify the exact number, he said Dybantsa could’ve made more had he chosen to sign elsewhere with more storied programs.

Young was hired in April 2024 after spending five years on the Phoenix Suns staff. To even be in the mix for players of Dybantsa’s caliber, Young vowed to run BYU basketball like a professional franchise, inspiring a new level of commitment from fans and, most importantly, the deep-pocketed boosters. Some of them come from the so-called Silicon Slopes, a hotspot for tech companies and startups between Salt Lake City and Provo.

Dybantsa, a 6-foot-9 ball-dominant player, grew up idolizing the effortless scoring nature of his favorite player, Kevin Durant. He’s leading college basketball in scoring (25.3 points per game), played the entirety of a game five times in the past month alone and poured in 40 points last week in BYU’s Big 12 tournament opener. He is expected to be one of the first three picks in the NBA Draft and has NIL deals with Nike, Red Bull and Fanatics.

His rarity and the brevity of his time on campus makes this NCAA Tournament appearance one overflowing with intrigue. The Cougars (23-11, 9-9) earned a No. 6 seed in the West region and will face No. 11 seed Texas on Thursday in Portland, Ore.

BYU struggled down the stretch after starting the season 17-2 and being ranked as high as No. 7 in the country. The Cougars lost starter Richie Saunders to an ACL tear on Feb. 14, have floundered defensively and need more help for Dybantsa and secondary star point guard Rob Wright III.

“When you bring in a kid like AJ, people automatically think, ‘Final Four or bust,’” said Jimmer Fredette, the 2011 national player of the year who fueled one of BYU’s three total Sweet 16 runs with his depth-defying 3-point range. “With injuries it’s obviously been difficult, but people don’t temper expectations overnight.”

Expectations are a byproduct of not only emotional buy-in from BYU’s fan base, but also the investment made to create a program home to star recruits worldwide.

In the days after he was hired, Young hosted a dinner in The Annex, BYU’s basketball practice facility. It was a priority. To high-level boosters, he laid out his vision of building a staff, but most crucially, how he would change the level of recruits BYU could go after and even sign.

“I think it spoke the same language as a lot of the people that support this place,” Young said.

In Kevin Young’s first season, BYU made the program’s third-ever Sweet 16 and went 26-10. (Chris Gardner / Getty Images)

Young told The Athletic last week in Kansas City that BYU’s revenue-share salary structure for its roster this season featured an approach similar to what is done in the NBA: max out three players — Dybantsa, Wright and Saunders — and spend the remaining amount of your allotment on the rest of the roster. Wright, a former five-star high school recruit, is reportedly making $3 million this season after he left Baylor for BYU.

“What we did wasn’t that much rocket science,” said Young, who recently pushed back on the narrative that BYU is writing blank checks.

The school says its NIL approach has been quick and strategic and that its spending is sustainable. BYU’s moves have still furrowed brows within the college basketball establishment.

“There was a lot of discussion about being at the top,” said BYU vice president Keith Vorkink. “I think, for one, the fact that we were in the game shocked some people that we would even participate because we’re a faith-based university.”

Whether BYU should be investing in splashy athletic facilities and paying its coaches top dollar spurred handwringing among church leaders in recent decades, according to Patrick Q. Mason, chair of Mormon history and culture at Utah State University. In a podcast appearance last year, Elder Clark G. Gilbert, the former commissioner of the church education system, said he didn’t want BYU to get into the business of being the highest bidder at any cost for players. Gilbert was confirmed as a member of the Church’s Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in February.

“We can never become a pay-for-play culture,” Gilbert said on the podcast. “We would undermine everything at BYU if that comes out. It is tempting to buy one player at a time. If they don’t fit the mission, it would unravel everything.”

Athletes at BYU are part of a distinct culture. The stated mission of BYU Athletics is about Jesus Christ and inspiring others by living His values. Faculty, coaches and students must sign and abide by the school’s honor code, which requires they abstain from premarital sex, alcohol, drugs or vaping.

When asked what his favorite class was, Dybantsa routinely told TV announcers in production meetings it was his Book of Mormon class, a requirement for BYU students to fulfill a religious courses requirement.

“I just got to respect the rules, just like when you’re back home: You got to respect the house rules,” Dybantsa told The Athletic.

It was once considered a stiff challenge to recruit a steadier stream of non-LDS athletes to BYU; that is no longer the case. The school even touts its honor code as a strength for athletes who want a distraction-free culture.

But when the code is allegedly broken, it draws scrutiny.

In July, starting quarterback Jake Retzlaff withdrew from BYU and transferred to Tulane after a woman filed a civil lawsuit in May accusing him of sexual assault and battery. The lawsuit was later withdrawn. Retzlaff denied the allegations and said the encounter was consensual. He reportedly could have faced a seven-game suspension for violating the honor code. In November, BYU junior guard Kennard Davis Jr., a transfer from Southern Illinois, served a two-game suspension after being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and marijuana possession.

But adherence to the university’s values hasn’t hindered the revenue-generating programs from expanding their recruiting horizons.

Under Young and football coach Kalani Sitake, BYU athletics is an option for all blue-chip recruits, not just Latter-day Saints. In Young’s fewer than three years on the job, BYU has landed three commitments from five-star players — former guard Egor Demin (a lottery pick in the 2025 NBA Draft), Dybantsa and incoming recruit Bruce Branch III — none of whom are LDS.

From 1999 to 2023, every BYU starting quarterback had ties to the Church. BYU’s starting quarterbacks in recent years have been Jewish and Catholic. In 2022, under former head coach Mark Pope, BYU basketball fielded an entire starting five of non-LDS athletes for the first time in school history. Dybantsa is Catholic. Wright is Christian, but not LDS. And, this year’s BYU roster has six international players, continuing a trend set in motion by Pope before he took the job at his alma mater, Kentucky.

A more welcoming presence to outsiders from the LDS Church has, according to Mason, allowed BYU to expand its reach and allow its athletics department to adjust. There aren’t enough elite LDS athletes to be able to compete at the Power 4 level on membership alone.

“You cannot have a 90 to 95 percent LDS roster in today’s college athletics,” said Mason. “And that lines up nicely with the theological shift within the Church where the Church is much more comfortable with people of other faiths or no faiths at all, which was not the case as recently as 30 years ago.”

While no money is appropriated from the Church to the BYU athletic department, there remains cultural influence from the top down. Mason said the “fork in the road” was not ignored when, after a decade as an FBS independent in football and a decade in the West Coast Conference basketball footprint, BYU joined a power conference in the Big 12 in 2023. The move hasn’t come without its challenges. The BYU football and basketball teams have received derogatory chants targeting the LDS Church at venues of four conference opponents.

“It was a fork either toward irrelevance on the national stage or to prominence,” Mason said. “But the only way to get to prominence was through big money, and it just so happened that now over the past half-century, Latter-day Saints have become one of the more affluent minority groups in the country.”

That has worked in tandem with the explosion of Utah’s local economy in the past decade, highlighted by the area across the Wasatch Front that features more than 1,000 tech companies and startups, including companies such as Adobe, Oracle and Microsoft opening offices or campuses. Utah Jazz and Utah Mammoth owner Ryan Smith is a billionaire BYU graduate and has been a staunch supporter of BYU athletics.

Like Dybantsa, there are still T-shirts of Fredette being sold in the BYU bookstore. When college basketball fans think of BYU, they think of Fredette launching from just inside half court. Fredette said when the NIL era began in 2021, he had several wealthy donors reach out to him ready to help launch this next phase of BYU basketball.

“Everyone told me, ‘I cannot wait to put an imprint on these programs,’” Fredette said.

In February 2025, one BYU alumnus and donor told ESPN, “You’re not going to outbid us.”

Recently, BYU’s donors once again flexed their muscles, helping to retain Sitake, who at the 11th hour spurred a lucrative contract offer from Penn State. Jason McGowan, the founder of Crumbl cookie, a Utah-based dessert chain, told The Athletic donors went to “very substantial” lengths to keep Sitake and members of his staff in Provo after reaching the Big 12 title game.

These are the last days in BYU blue for Dybantsa, who has lived up to the hype and could make the Cougars a tempting dark horse for some bracket connoisseurs.

BYU is playing in its 33rd NCAA Tournament but still looking for its first Final Four. The Cougars last made an Elite Eight run in 1981 behind a star guard with a bowl cut named Danny Ainge. They made the Sweet 16 in Young’s first season last spring.

Dybantsa’s long-stated goals for his time at BYU include winning a national championship.

“I’ve got to go win six (games) in a row,” he said last weekend on “The Winning Formula” podcast.

Building off what Dybantsa has already accomplished this season, Young and his staff landed their third five-star recruit in as many years earlier this month. On March 4, Branch, a 6-foot-7 prospect from Gilbert, Ariz., announced his decision live on ESPN.

He unzipped his jacket to reveal a royal blue BYU jersey No. 3 — just like Dybantsa.
