Understanding Shingles: Ed Sheeran’s Battle with the Condition

Ed Sheeran revealed this week he’s been dealing with a concerning health issue.

The singer and songwriter took to social media with a wide-spanning life update earlier this week, and noted that he has been battling shingles, a viral skin infection, for a month.

Sheeran shared eight notes including one that read “Ive had shingles for the last month, wouldn’t recommend it, but on the mend now.”

Sheeran’s health trouble comes amid a break in his Loop tour, which he kicked off with dates in New Zealand and Australia earlier this year. The “Perfect” singer is slated to return to the stage for the North American leg, starting in May in the Dominican Republic.

In his life update, Sheeran noted that the tour is still on as scheduled.

“Restarting the loop tour in a week and a bit, cant wait to get back cracking on that, see you lovely people there,” he wrote.

What is shingles?

Shingles is a rash-causing illness which can be painful, itchy or tingly, and is caused by a virus reactivating, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“People get shingles when the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which causes chickenpox, reactivates in their bodies after they have already had chickenpox,” CDC says.

The rash can lead to complications, the most common one being long-term nerve pain, postherpetic neuralgia, or PHN, the CDC notes.

What is the most common age for someone to get shingles?

Sheeran’s case of shingles is somewhat rare for his age of 35.

“About half of all shingles cases are in adults age 60 or older,” National Institute on Aging notes. “The chance of getting shingles becomes much greater by age 70.”

But, the institute continues, “Everyone who has had chickenpox is at risk for developing shingles.”

Around 1 in 3 people develop shingles in their lifetime in America, according to the CDC.

How to prevent against shingles

The best way to prevent shingles is with the vaccine, the CDC says. The agency advises adults 50 and up who are suffering from the condition to take 2 doses of the vaccine, RZV and Shingrix.

“Shingrix is also recommended for adults 19 years and older who have weakened immune systems because of disease or therapy,” the CDC adds.

A small group of people who get vaccinated will still get shingles, but the vaccine can still provide excellent protection against PHN after infection.

If you have shingles, the CDC recommends covering the rash and avoid touching it in order to help stop the virus from spreading.

Antiviral medicines that help treat shingles include Acyclovir, Valacyclovir and Famciclovir, according to the CDC.

What happens in La Brea?

Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers Welcome Branford Marsalis During New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Set

On April 25, Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers delivered their highly anticipated New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival set. The ensemble’s latest appearance arrived amid an undertaking of live performances in support of the bandleader’s latest studio project, Indigo Park, released on April 3. During Saturday’s frame at the Fair Grounds, an old connection was reignited when Hornsby brought out Branford Marsalis and nodded to their crossover with the Grateful Dead as well as their subsequent collaborations. 

Before Hornsby’s tenure, Marsalis joined the Grateful Dead for the first time on March 29, 1990, at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y. The performance included one of the most beloved renditions of “Eyes of the World,” later included on the live compilation LP, Without a Net. That summer, Brent Mydland played his last show with the Dead on July 23, 1990, and passed away three days later. The massive loss pressed the group to fill the lineup gap, resulting in Hornsby’s entry into the fold along with fellow keyboard player Vince Welnick in September 1990. 

Before capping off the year, the Grateful Dead and their two-keyboard tandem of Welnick and Hornsby participated in the annual New Year’s Eve tradition of putting on a live spectacle, this time on Dec. 31, 1990, at the Oakland Coliseum Arena. The performance represented Hornsby and Marsalis’ initial on-stage meeting, as facilitated by the Dead. 

Marsalis appeared on Hornsby’s fourth album, Harbor Lights, adding more layers to their storied history on tunes like “Talk of the Town,” “Long Tall Cool One,” and “Rainbow’s Cadillac.” Their history continued over the next decades, illuminated by an array of musical meetups like the MLB-fledged National Anthem in 1995, Gathering of the Vibes’ conjuring of “King of the Hill” into “Big Boss Man” in addition to All Good Festivals’ 2012 “Hell in the Bucket” delivery, which also included Weir – just to name a few.

During Hornsby & The Noisemakers’ [J.V. Collier, Chad Wright, John Mailander, Gibb Droll, J.T. Thomas] festival set in the Big Easy on Saturday, Marsalis joined the group on the Fais Do-Do Stage to add to Hornsby’s Don Henley co-write “The End of Innocence,” “Prairie Dog Town,” and “Way It Is,” [See an additional show note below]. The jazz legend and group of premier players conjured layers of keys and strings that elicited one-of-a-kind sonic designs like those on a tightly woven Persian rug, impressing with the saxophone player’s prominence – distinguishable blows like floral accents that would otherwise be regarded as a solo.

Marsalis wasn’t the group’s only guest. Hornsby also brought out Matt Perrine (tuba) and Craig Klein (trombone) from the New Orleans Nightcrawlers to help on features off the new record, his final collaboration with the late Bobby Weir, “Might As Well Be Me, Florinda,” in addition to “Way It Is.”

Hall County Deputies Launch Boating Patrols Starting May 1

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office will begin its summer boating patrols with a new boat on Friday, May 1.

HCSO said it purchased a 29-foot cabin rigid inflatable boat last year, which will now be used for the upcoming boating season. The boat was purchased using $280,000 in asset forfeiture funds, money seized from local criminal enterprise.

“With the growth of visitor traffic on Lanier, we knew a few years ago we needed a boat with advanced navigation technology and communications gear so we could optimize our lake patrols,” Capt. Michael Mount of HCSO’s Uniform Patrol Division, said. “Not only is this boat equipped with better technology, the cabin is climate controlled, allowing our deputies to work in all types of weather.”

The patrol deputies assigned to the unit collaborate with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, assisting with lake patrols, security at lakefront parks and enforcement of boating regulations, among other duties. Two HCSO deputies currently are assigned to the Marine Patrol Unit.

HCSO said the unit’s older boat, 2016 Sea Chaser 24 HFC Center Console Patrol Boat, will also be available as a backup for lake patrols. During busier times, such as Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, both boats will be on the water.

Lake patrols will continue through October.
