Virginia State University abruptly closed for the day Thursday.

Several college campuses across Virginia were placed on lockdown Friday morning after reports of a possible threat prompted swift action by school officials and law enforcement. The precautionary measures led to the cancellation of classes and a heavy police presence in the affected areas.

Authorities confirmed that multiple institutions, including, issued alerts to students and staff urging them to shelter in place while officers investigated the situation. Emergency notifications were sent via text, email, and campus loudspeaker systems, advising individuals to stay indoors and away from windows.

Local police departments, along with state authorities, coordinated to secure the campuses. While details of the threat remain under investigation, officials emphasized that the lockdowns were enacted to prioritize student and staff safety.

Witnesses reported seeing increased patrols, road closures, and law enforcement vehicles surrounding entrances to several campuses. Parents and community members gathered near the affected areas, anxiously awaiting updates.

By early afternoon, some restrictions were gradually lifted, though classes and campus events remained canceled for the day. Officials stated that additional security measures would remain in place until the investigation concludes.

“We are taking every precaution to ensure our campuses remain safe environments for learning,” one college spokesperson said. “We appreciate the cooperation of our students, faculty, and staff during this difficult situation.”

Authorities have not yet released specific details regarding the nature of the threat or whether any suspects are in custody. Updates are expected as the investigation progresses.

“Due to a potential threat, Virginia State University is currently on lockdown,” the university said in a Thursday morning email to students and staff. “All students who are on campus should remain indoors, and those off campus should not come to campus at this time. All classes have been canceled, and all VSU employees are instructed to work remotely. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.”

A seemingly similar threat was made against Hampton University, another Historically Black College or University (HBCU), on Thursday.

Hampton officials did not elaborate on the nature of the potential threat. However, all non-essential activities — including classes and campus activities — are canceled for Thursday and Friday, officials say.
