Active roster moves: DB Sam Franklin Jr. and DT DeWayne Carter
Buffalo announced that it has signed defensive back and special teams contributor Sam Franklin Jr. to the active 53-man roster. The Bills originally signed Franklin Jr. to the practice squad on Aug. 27 after he spent the offseason and training camp with the Broncos.
“He’s a safety by position, but he’s made his name on special teams in this league,” Beane shared after Franklin Jr. initially joined the team. “A standout gunner, kick cover player.”
Franklin Jr. began his NFL career in 2020 as an undrafted free agent with the Carolina Panthers and spent the last five seasons with the team.
The Buffalo Bills have made a series of roster adjustments as they look to strengthen key areas ahead of the season. The team announced the signing of defensive back Sam Franklin Jr. to their active roster, bolstering their secondary depth.
Franklin, who has previously shown versatility in both coverage and special teams, is expected to contribute immediately. His addition comes as the Bills aim to reinforce their defensive backfield, particularly with injuries and ongoing competition for starting positions.
In addition to Franklin, the Bills signed a veteran kicker to their practice squad. This move provides insurance for the kicking game, ensuring stability in case of injury or inconsistent performance from the current roster. Details on the veteran kicker’s identity and prior experience are expected to be revealed in the coming days.
The Bills also made two additional roster moves, emphasizing their proactive approach to maintaining depth across the team. While the specifics of these moves were not disclosed immediately, the adjustments reflect Buffalo’s ongoing strategy to balance experience and emerging talent throughout the roster.
Head coach Sean McDermott expressed optimism about the latest signings, highlighting the importance of roster flexibility. “Adding Sam to our active roster and bringing in a veteran kicker strengthens our team in critical areas. We continue to evaluate talent and make moves that put us in the best position to compete each week,” McDermott said.
As the season approaches, fans can expect the Bills to remain active in managing their roster, ensuring both depth and competition at key positions. The addition of Franklin and the veteran kicker underscores the team’s commitment to preparedness and adaptability.
