Steelers Interview Cowboys Assistant for OC Position

The Pittsburgh Steelers are getting set to introduce Mike McCarthy as the team’s next head coach this afternoon at 2:00 P.M. And while the Steelers have the question of whom their next head coach will be answered, McCarthy will have to build a staff, and one name has emerged as the potential next offensive coordinator.

Per Adam Schefter, the Steelers are expected to interview Dallas Cowboys tight ends coach Lunda Wells this week for the offensive coordinator position.

According to league sources, the interview reflects Pittsburgh’s continued effort to modernize its offense after inconsistent performances in recent years. Bringing in a coach from Dallas, one of the NFL’s more productive offensive units, signals the Steelers’ interest in fresh ideas and proven systems.

The Cowboys assistant has been part of an offense known for its balance, creativity, and ability to maximize quarterback play, traits the Steelers are eager to incorporate. While details of the interview have not been disclosed, the meeting is believed to be exploratory as Pittsburgh evaluates multiple candidates for the role.

The Steelers parted ways with their previous offensive coordinator following the season, citing the need for a new direction and improved consistency on that side of the ball. With a talented core that includes young skill players and a developing quarterback situation, the organization views the coordinator hire as a critical offseason decision.

Pittsburgh is expected to continue interviewing candidates from both the NFL and collegiate ranks in the coming days. Team officials have emphasized the importance of finding a coordinator who can adapt schemes to personnel, emphasize player development, and deliver results quickly.

“Cowboys tight ends coach Lunda Wells is expected to interview this week for the Steelers offensive coordinator job,” Schefter reports. “Wells worked under Steelers HC Mike McCarthy in Dallas for five years, and interviewed this month for the Commanders OC job. He also is head coach for the west team in tonight’s East-West Shrine game.”

Wells has been with the Cowboys since 2020, spending five years under McCarthy, as Schefter noted.

It’s worth mentioning that McCarthy will be the offensive play-caller, so whoever the Steelers hire for the position won’t be calling plays on game day.
