Southampton vs Portsmouth: Championship stats & head-to-head

The rivalry between Southampton and Portsmouth, famously known as the South Coast Derby, is one of English football’s most passionate and historic clashes. With both clubs competing in the Championship this season, the fixture once again takes on major importance, not just for bragging rights but also for promotion ambitions.

Recent Form

Southampton have shown strong consistency in the Championship, pushing toward the top half of the table with their possession-based, attacking style. Their midfield control and forward line have been key in securing vital points.

Portsmouth, meanwhile, continue to build on their impressive League One promotion, aiming to establish themselves in the second tier. They have proven resilient defensively and dangerous on the counter, making them a tough opponent for any side.

Head-to-Head Record

The Saints and Pompey share a fierce history that stretches back more than a century:

  • Total meetings: Over 70 matches across all competitions

  • Southampton wins: Slightly ahead in victories, especially in recent decades

  • Portsmouth wins: Memorable triumphs, particularly in cup competitions, including their famous FA Cup run in the late 2000s

  • Draws: A fair number, often tense and hard-fought battles

The most recent competitive meetings between the clubs came in the EFL Cup, with Southampton enjoying a comfortable win at Fratton Park in 2019.

Key Players to Watch

  • Southampton: Their attacking talent, led by sharp finishers and dynamic wingers, will look to exploit Portsmouth’s back line.

  • Portsmouth: A disciplined defensive unit and creative midfielders could prove decisive if they catch Southampton on the break.

What’s at Stake

Beyond the historic rivalry, both clubs have plenty riding on this clash. For Southampton, every point is crucial in their push to return to the Premier League. For Portsmouth, a strong showing in a derby could boost confidence as they fight to secure Championship survival and build momentum.

Prediction

Given Southampton’s experience at this level and their home advantage, they may enter the match as favorites. However, in derby games like the South Coast clash, form often goes out the window—making this one of the most unpredictable fixtures on the Championship calendar.

Being two port cities so closely positioned on the south coast, the potential for local rivalry to manifest in the two clubs is obvious.

But while the friction has always remained fierce, there has been a surisingly low number of matches between Saints and Pompey – just 72 in 125 years.

The animosity was really ramped up in the early 2000s and one man was right at the centre – Harry Redknapp.

Having led Pompey to promotion to the Premier League in 2002, Redknapp left Fratton Park two years later and, despite vowing there would be “no chance” of him doing so, made the controversial switch to St Mary’s just a few weeks later.

But Portsmouth fans would have the last laugh as Saints were relegated at the end of the season, with Redknapp resigning and again crossing the divide back to Portsmouth, where he would go on to win the FA Cup in 2007-08.
