When Klay Thompson decided to sign with the Dallas Mavericks ahead of the 2024-25 season, it no doubt broke many hearts in the Bay Area. Regardless, Dub Nation remains forever indebted to him for his services, which include bringing the Golden State Warriors four titles.

Embarking on a new chapter in Dallas, Thompson felt he could be a perfect fit alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, who were just coming off a Finals appearance. Everything seemed on track until February 2nd, 2025, when the shocking trade of Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers shook the entire NBA.

Finding himself in a highly volatile situation, Thompson stayed put with the Mavericks. But things only got worse, whether it was firing the highly tainted GM Nico Harrison or trading Anthony Davis, who couldn’t stay healthy.

Today, their only upside is rookie sensation Cooper Flagg. That said, there have been talks about the franchise potentially entering a rebuild, placing the future of veterans like Thompson in uncertainty. Nonetheless, the 36-year-old at least appears to be taking each day as it comes.

Recently asked how he handled the last two seasons with the Mavs, Thompson chose to tread carefully.

“You want to win. You want to win every chance you can, especially in this league. It’s really hard to win. Although it hasn’t gone our way, it’s still awesome being out there … I love the game with all my heart,”said Klay at the blue carpet event of the Mavs Ball foundation.

On the professional front

While Thompson can still ball, he no longer has the same impact he did back in the day with Golden State. The back-to-back catastrophic knee injuries have a lot to do with it. Once a top two-way guard in the league, Klay is now primarily seen in the role of a reserve.

He is currently averaging a career low in almost every stat category, be it his playing minutes, points, rebounds, assists, 3-point efficiency, etc. Not an outcome Thompson or his well-wishers imagined when he first signed with the Mavs.

But Klay has come to terms with the reality.

With the Mavs far from making the Play-In tournament, let alone the playoffs, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for Thompson.

Not fitting the current roster

With AD gone and Flagg the prime focus of Mavs management, one can predict that Thompson will be shipped to a new destination this summer. If Dallas is looking to undergo a complete revamp after the Doncic disaster, some tough decisions will need to be made.

Klay still has $17 million remaining on his contract before he turns free agent in 2027. It remains to be seen how the front office handles the situation, especially with Irving in the mix. Though Thompson can still contribute in different ways, his salary could potentially pose a hurdle.

At the same time, there has been a growing narrative about fans wanting to see him return to the Bay Area for one Last Dance.

Paul George Addresses Substance Use and Mental Health Challenges

CAMDEN, N.J. — Paul George declined to get into the specifics of the failed drug test that landed him a 25-game suspension but says he is mentally and physically ready to help the Philadelphia 76ers with their playoff push over the last 10 games of the season.

George will play for the Sixers on Wednesday night against the Chicago Bulls.

The Sixers — who also played the past 13 games without an injured Joel Embiid — went 13-12 in George’s absence and entered Tuesday night’s games at 39-33 and in seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings.

George was suspended in late January for violating the terms of the NBA’s anti-drug program.

He opened his statement Tuesday at the 76ers’ complex in New Jersey with an apology to the team, its fans and his family for the poor judgment that led to his flunked test.

“To let people down hurt more than kind of anything,” George said.

He said his choice to take a banned substance was connected to a mental health issue that developed because of an offseason knee injury that limited his production this season.

“The most difficult thing is when your body isn’t where you know it needs to be or where it once was,” George said. “That leads and bleeds into the mental side of things, knowing that you’re limited. But for me, I feel good, my body is feeling great. Mentally, I know I’m capable of doing what I can do and what I’ve been able to on the court for years.”

George has averaged 16 points in 27 games this season for the Sixers. He had one of his best games of the season in the week he was suspended, a 32-point outburst fueled by nine 3-pointers in a win over Milwaukee.

George, 35, signed a $212 million, four-year contract in free agency ahead of the 2024 season. But his first year in Philly was marred by knee and adductor injuries that resulted in the forward having one of the worst years of his NBA career.

George averaged 16.2 points in just 41 games, easily his lowest scoring average in a full season since he averaged 12.1 points for Indiana in his second NBA season.

He then had surgery in July on his left knee after he was injured during a workout, and he missed the first 12 games of this season.

“Being a pro athlete takes a toll on you,” George said. “My body wasn’t where I wanted it to be. The expectations to perform because of my body not being where it needed to be, obviously, I’m going to have an expectation for myself. That’s what led to a poor decision at the time.”

George said the hiatus gave time for his body to heal from nagging injuries, healing that in turn has improved his state of mind.

“These 25 games were just what I needed, I think, for my body,” he said.

The suspension cost George — a nine-time All-Star — roughly $11.7 million of his $51.7 million salary, or about $469,692 for each of the 25 games missed.

“I’ve said it throughout my career, dealing with mental health, I’m no superhero,” George said. “I’m human, and I made a mistake in that moment.”

Embiid, the 2023 MVP, has missed the past 13 games with a right oblique strain, and All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey has missed nine straight games with a right finger tendon strain.

There was no immediate timetable on their returns.

George said he’s ready to fill the scoring void and lift the Sixers out of the play-in bubble and securely into the playoffs.

“I’ve been feeling great, feeling explosive again, feeling strong again,” he said. “I feel like I’m back on that level of being able to perform and be the focal guy and be the scorer.”

The Los Angeles Chargers today signed with guard Kayode Awosika.

Awosika (name pronounced KY-oh-dee ah-woah-SHE-kah) comes to Los Angeles after spending the last four seasons with Detroit, playing on an offensive line for one of football’s top offenses. A five-year veteran, Awosika signed as an undrafted free agent with Philadelphia in 2021, spending a season with the Eagles before signing with Detroit and playing for the Lions the last four seasons. Heavy Snow Warning Issued, Travel May Be Impossible

The official start of spring may have passed, but two states are still gearing up for strong winter storms this week.

The National Weather Service issued a new winter weather advisory with heavy snow in the forecast as up to more than a foot of snow hits – four days after the start of spring.

“A strong cold front is expected to bring some relief from the heat mid-to-late this week as it makes its way south across the nation,” the National Weather Service said. “This system will originate from a Pacific low pressure system that will move onshore in the Northwest today. The energy from this system will push across the Intermountain West and drive a cold front south across the central and eastern U.S. later this week.”

Washington Bracing for More Snow

The Cascades of Whatcom and Skagit Counties, Cascades of Snohomish and Northern King Counties including Mount Baker and Stevens Pass are expected to see heavy snowfall this week.

“A convergence zone will develop Wednesday afternoon which could bring a period of locally heavier snow, especially at Steven’s Pass,” the National Weather Service said while warning “travel could be very difficult to impossible.”

Total snow accumulations between eight and 12 inches are expected across the region, but Mount Baker could see up to 57 inches of snowfall over the next three days.

Blizzard Conditions in Alaska

The National Weather Service defines blizzards as dangerous winter storms that are a combination of blowing snow and wind resulting in very low visibilities. While heavy snowfalls and severe cold often accompany blizzards, they are not required to hit the criteria.

Officially, the National Weather Service defines a blizzard as a storm which contains large amounts of snow or blowing snow, with winds in excess of 35 mph and visibilities of less than 1/4 mile for an extended period of time.

Alaska will see such conditions with blowing snow expected and winds gusting as high as 45 mph from Wednesday morning through Wednesday night.

Detroit Tigers phenom Kevin McGonigle, ESPN’s No. 2 prospect for the 2026 season, will be on the Opening Day roster, it was announced Tuesday.

The 21-year-old McGonigle, an infielder with an above-average bat and real baserunning/defensive value, was the 37th pick in the 2023 draft and has never played above the Double-A level, where he saw action in only 46 games last season.

Defensively, he saw action this spring at shortstop (10 games) and third base (7).

“He continued to demonstrate his ability to handle the moment, and he continued to hold his own,” Hinch said, “The at-bat quality was as advertised. His defense was really impressive with the details of his first step, his pre-pitch, completing plays.

“He never looked uncomfortable throughout the spring, even though he will tell you there were some nerve-wracking moments. And he should be nervous. He’s 21 and has never played with this much attention on him, albeit one of the top prospects in baseball.”

The Harry Potter Franchise Has Lost Several Beloved Cast Members

It might be a somber note to begin on, but it is nonetheless an impactful point to make, especially for those who grew up loving the Harry Potter films. Sadly, too many wonderful performers who starred in those original movies have passed away. The huge and prosperous fantasy series Game of Thrones had a major issue going into its final seasons. There were no blueprints to follow. The series had gotten ahead of the books, and it was hard to know how to conclude the legendary run. Famously, Game of Thrones fumbled the finish, and Harry Potter almost ended up with the same fate. Because when the Harry Potter movies began to be filmed, the novels hadn’t been finalized yet. In fact, when Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was first released in 2001, only the first four books were available to read.

Some information was available to the creative team on how to tackle those early films best, but there were still so many unknowns. That meant that as the movie series developed, it was always retconning and adjusting as it went along, to cater to the narrative arc of later books. Characters that no longer seemed that important suddenly had a lot more to do; objects like the Invisibility Cloak were suddenly involved in massive plot points, and seemingly obscure moments were given so much more meaning. Watching the films back now, there’s always a feeling that the movies had to shift things up just as much as Hogwarts’ moving staircase.

The Dated CGI Doesn’t Always Hold Up

One of the great joys of Harry Potter is its use of practical effects in its most fantastical and terrifying scenes. From amazing props to spectacular miniatures, a variety of classic techniques were employed to ensure that this magical world was grounded in physical reality. However, that approach can only take the movies so far. Eventually, CGI had to be usedThose early movies are clearly marked by poor CGI, particularly in scenes featuring Fluffy the dog and the troll that invades the dungeons. Some moments go unnoticed, with the Golden Snitch effect particularly working. As the series progresses, there are vast improvements, but the films still show their age. The giants that appear later in the saga, for example, don’t quite live up to expectations. Credit has to be given to the Dementors, Hippogriffs, and House Elves, though, showing that even in some problem areas, the movies still shone when needed.

Fantastic Beasts Hurt the Franchise’s Legacy

The Harry Potter series, despite some of its faults, is considered to be one of the most well-made fantasy adaptations ever produced. Very few film sagas managed to maintain their quality from start to finish. That’s why when the Fantastic Beasts films were announced, audiences were intrigued to see what was next. After all, the legacy of the Harry Potter films would surely play into what these prequels would produce. The first film introduced some great new characters and an ambitious premise

After that, though, the saga went downhill. By the third film, the Fantastic Beasts series was canceled completely. All those movies were in canon and changed the framing of the Harry Potter films. Some mystery was taken away from characters like Nicholas Flamel and Newt himself, while Hogwarts was revisited in the most underwhelming way possible. Fantastic Beasts was only supposed to add to the lore of the Wizarding World, but rewatching Harry Potter, it becomes clear that it accidentally took something away.

The First Two Harry Potter Films Feel Tonally Different

The beauty of the series lies in its being helmed by multiple directors, each of whom brings their own unique flavor to the proceedings. Yet, the first two films, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, feel totally different from the rest of the series. Hogwarts is altered dramatically, as are some other key locations, the color palette is shifted, and even key character designs are changed, like Professor Flitwick. Indeed, even some of the background characters, like the ghosts or Madam Hooch, are forgotten about as the saga progresses.

The Harry Potter series has a distinct identity in those first few films, which are warm and cozy. There’s a whimsicality to the designs, costumes, and many other elements. But all of those components shift as the series goes on, from the redesign of the uniforms to the new map for Hogwarts itself.
