Insights from Church Leaders

Their journeys though life have been quite different — Elder Gérald Caussé was the Church’s presiding bishop born in France, while Elder Clark G. Gilbert was the commissioner of Church education born in California.

Yet they’ve come to many of the same conclusions as recently called members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: Jesus Christ lives, He guides His Church through His prophets, and their new assignments cannot be fulfilled without divine help.

In the upcoming April 2026 general conference, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have the opportunity to sustain these two new Apostles as they begin lifelong missions to testify the Savior lives.

“I felt the love of God for me,” said Elder Caussé about being called, “and it was evident that I should accept this calling — and did it with great joy, actually, although I felt totally shocked and overwhelmed.”

Said Elder Gilbert: “We know we have things to improve and work on. And yet, I felt really confident that the Lord would make up the difference, that the keys were bigger than any one person and that I would be magnified in that calling.”

Elder Caussé, born in Bordeaux, France, was ordained on Nov. 6, 2025, filling the vacancy in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles created by the death of Church President Russell M. Nelson.

And Elder Gilbert — born in Oakland, California, and raised in Phoenix, Arizona — was ordained on Feb. 12, 2026, after the death of President Jeffrey R. Holland, president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

These new prophets, seers and revelators joined episodes 269 and 282 of the Church News podcast to acknowledge the people and experiences that have made it all possible.

The No. 1 responsibility

Within minutes of being asked by Church President Dallin H. Oaks to serve as an Apostle, Elder Caussé remembered Doctrine and Covenants 68:5-6:

“Behold, this is the promise of the Lord unto you, O ye my servants. Wherefore, be of good cheer, and do not fear, for I the Lord am with you, and will stand by you; and ye shall bear record of me, even Jesus Christ, that I am the Son of the living God, that I was, that I am, and that I am to come.”

As he bears witness of the Savior, Elder Caussé knows the Lord will stand by him in this calling, he said. “This is all the comfort I needed.”

Elder Gilbert also perceives this bigger picture, recognizing that “in the end, there is only one responsibility — and that is to testify, witness to the name of Jesus Christ in all the world.”

He quoted Doctrine and Covenants 107:23, which charges Apostles to be “special witnesses of the name of Christ in all the world.”

Since being called to the Twelve, Elder Caussé has felt an outpouring of love from the members of the Church, he said. Now he looks forward to spreading that love with even more.

“If I can share only part of the immense and infinite love of the Savior for people, if I can be that ambassador of love, I hope I can do that.”

‘Orchestrated in heaven’

As a missionary in the Japan Kobe Mission, a young-adult Clark Gilbert struggled at first to learn Japanese. “I realized, ‘This language is hard, but I am pretty sure the Lord wants me to learn it, or He would not have called me here,’” he recounted.

So he went to work studying hard, keeping track of vocabulary, improving his grammar and practicing his Japanese enunciation. He made the Lord his partner in learning Japanese, he said.

“I realized as a missionary, if the Lord wants you to do it, if He has called you to do it, He will magnify and make up the difference.”

Elder Gilbert and his wife, Sister Christine Gilbert, have kept that attitude through his various assignments — from 16th president of BYU–Idaho and first president of BYU–Pathway Worldwide to General Authority Seventy — and now while he serves as an Apostle.

When Elder Caussé looks back at his life, “it feels like a few things were orchestrated in heaven,” he said. This particularly became evident when he became a member of the Presiding Bishopric, which has responsibility for the temporal affairs of the Church.

Having studied business in college, Elder Caussé worked a number of years in strategy consulting and food distribution, which exposed him to the concept of leading a big organization.

“Managing people is very close to ministering to people,” he said. “And so I have applied in management a lot of things that I experience in church.” And it goes both ways: “Church service helped me more in my career than career helped me in Church service.”

The first night after being called, Elder and Sister Gilbert stayed up late reflecting on how they’ve seen each member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles witness of Christ.

“There had been a moment where I had heard them bear witness to the name of Jesus Christ,” said Elder Gilbert. “Not only where I heard it, but where I had a witness of their calling. And that has been a strength to me.”

Shortly after being called as an Apostle, Elder Caussé was invited by President Oaks to a room with members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and First Presidency to receive their congratulations one by one.

“That outpouring of love from the Twelve was something that gave me a lot of courage,” he said.

Gospel strength in consecrated families

Elder Caussé’s pioneer heritage begins with his parents, the first members of the Church in their family. They were baptized in less than three months of meeting with the missionaries. “They were brave to embrace this religion they did not know a lot about based on their feelings and the inspiration of the Spirit.”

His dad went on to serve as a branch president five times. Elder Caussé carried on his parents’ valiance from a young age, as a Primary pianist at 12 and Sunday School president at 16.

Today, “joy in our home is felt whenever there is something about the gospel,” he said. The Caussés adore what he characterizes as their “consecrated family.”

When asked what qualities he sees in his wife, Sister Valérie Caussé, Elder Caussé responded, “How many hours do you have?” She is genuine, authentic, sincere and full of faith, he continued, and she shows her love for others in a very warm and natural way.

Together they raised five children, two of them living in the United States. “They never complained,” no matter where the family went. “We know we can count on them.”

Similarly, wherever Elder Gilbert had to move his family throughout his life — for career changes or Church assignments — he knew he could count on the support of his wife.

“Part of what was amazing about her is she would be willing to go anywhere, especially if it was something the Lord asked of us.”

He added, “It made it easy for me, when there were hard decisions, to know my wife had confidence that if the Lord had called us to do something, He would honor it.”

What gives them the strength to serve, even in the face of adversity? “All of that is grounded in the covenants we made early on in the temple and in our temple sealing, and we have never looked back and always wanted to do what the Lord wanted us to do.”

They’ve also appreciated the encouragement of their eight children in Elder Gilbert’s apostolic assignment. “This will affect all of them,” he said. “And yet, every one of them in their own unique ways was willing to support this and support their parents.”

Witnessing the mantle of the Prophet

As President of the Church, President Oaks “does not teach what he was prepared to do or what his background would suggest,” said Elder Gilbert, “but he teaches what the Lord tells him to speak.”

Elder Gilbert saw this personally when President Oaks addressed BYU students in a Feb. 10 devotional. The substance of the talk was amazing, said Elder Gilbert, but even more profound was the witness he received of the Prophet’s calling.

As commissioner of Church education, Elder Gilbert had conducted research for President Oaks’ remarks. “He was excited to give that message.” Yet taking on the prophetic mantle called for a change of plans.

“He said, ‘Clark, when we were first working on this, I was not yet the Prophet. And now that I am the Prophet, He is giving me a message that I need to give.’”

While in the Presiding Bishopric, Elder Caussé also saw the prophetic mantle when he reported directly to the First Presidency weekly for 13 years.

In that time, he came to love the late President Nelson’s forward-looking optimism, aptitude for connection and ability to teach the gospel simply. Even at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, President Nelson looked to the future with faith and hope, said Elder Caussé.

“Whenever I felt a little down or tired, I always thought of President Nelson, and that always gave me some boost, and I smiled whenever I thought about him.”

Having also worked closely with President Oaks, Elder Caussé said he admires the Prophet’s courage, resilience, humility and understanding of the complexities of the world.

“His mind is very bright,” he said, “and whenever there is a meeting and there is a good question that needs to be asked, that is President Oaks asking it.”

As newly called Apostles soon to be sustained in conference, Elder Caussé and Elder Gilbert relish their lifelong mission to testify that Jesus Christ lives.

“We can overcome death because of the Savior,” said Elder Gilbert. “We can be forgiven of our sins because of Jesus Christ. He will succor us in our infirmities and heal us when life is not fair. He is the Savior of the world. And I know that is true.”

Said Elder Caussé: “Jesus is the Christ. His Church is again upon the earth. It is where everyone can find the love of the Savior in the ordinances of salvation and exaltation, help that is needed through brothers and sisters that are unified together, living the gospel in a way that is blessing their lives forever.”

Is Crypto Sustainable?

The rise of cryptocurrencies, especially Bitcoin, has ignited discussions not just about their financial implications, but also their environmental repercussions. As the world becomes increasingly aware of climate change, the mining practices associated with cryptocurrency are under scrutiny.

The Basics of Cryptocurrency Mining

Cryptocurrency mining refers to the process by which transactions are verified and added to the public ledger known as the blockchain. This process requires substantial computational power, which, in turn, demands significant energy resources.

The Environmental Footprint

Mining operations often rely on fossil fuels, leading to increased carbon emissions. For instance:

  • Energy Consumption: Bitcoin mining alone consumes as much energy as some small countries. Estimates suggest that it uses approximately 121 terawatt-hours annually.
  • Greenhouse Gas Emissions: A significant percentage of mining operations run on coal-dependent grids, exacerbating greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Resource Depletion: Cooling systems used in mining operations require vast amounts of water, putting pressure on local water supplies.

Balancing Act: Sustainability Efforts

Despite its environmental cost, the crypto community is striving for sustainability. Various initiatives are emerging to mitigate these impacts:

  • Renewable Energy Sources: Some mining operations are actively transitioning to renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydroelectric power.
  • Carbon Offsetting: Certain projects focus on contributing to carbon offset programs to balance out their emissions.
  • Innovative Technologies: Improving mining hardware and software to maximize efficiency can lead to reduced energy consumption.

    The Energy Problem

One of the biggest criticisms of cryptocurrency is its energy consumption. Networks that rely on proof-of-work (PoW)—such as Bitcoin—require vast amounts of computational power to validate transactions. This process, known as mining, consumes significant electricity, often comparable to that of entire countries. Much of this energy still comes from fossil fuels, raising concerns about carbon emissions and climate change.

    A Shift Toward Greener Alternatives

Not all cryptocurrencies operate the same way. In recent years, many blockchain networks have transitioned to or adopted proof-of-stake (PoS) systems. Unlike PoW, PoS does not rely on energy-intensive mining. Instead, validators are chosen based on the number of coins they hold and are willing to “stake.” This shift dramatically reduces energy consumption and has been embraced as a more sustainable model.

Ethereum’s transition from PoW to PoS marked a major milestone, cutting its energy use by over 99%. This move signaled that large-scale blockchain networks can evolve toward greener practices without sacrificing functionality.

    Renewable Energy and Innovation

Another promising trend is the growing use of renewable energy in crypto mining. Some mining operations are relocating to regions with abundant hydroelectric, solar, or wind power. Additionally, innovative solutions—such as carbon offset programs and energy-efficient hardware—are helping reduce the environmental footprint of crypto networks.

    Challenges Beyond Energy

Sustainability in crypto goes beyond electricity use. Regulatory uncertainty, market volatility, and scalability issues also impact its long-term viability. Governments around the world are still developing frameworks to manage crypto assets, and without clear regulations, widespread adoption may face hurdles.

Moreover, as the number of users grows, blockchain networks must handle increased transaction volumes efficiently. Sustainable growth depends on solving these scalability challenges without increasing environmental costs.

Conclusion

The debate on the sustainability of cryptocurrency mining is complex. While it currently poses significant environmental challenges, the potential for innovation and transition toward more sustainable practices exists. As awareness grows and technology evolves, the future of crypto mining could become less of a burden on our planet.

Man City vs. Liverpool Predictions

Every Friday, I pick for you the best or most exciting games not to be missed in the world of football each weekend. From derbies to top of the table clashes, relegation six-pointers to world-class players facing each other or other interesting tactical battles, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

This week, we take you to England, France, Spain, Turkey and Germany for more Cup magic, two huge derbies, some top-of-the-table clashes and big battles for European places!

FA Cup quarterfinals
Kickoff: Saturday, 7:45 a.m. ET / 12:45 p.m. GMT (watch on ESPN+)

So far this season, it is advantage Manchester City in their clashes with Liverpool. Two wins: an easy one at the Etihad Stadium and an almost miraculous one at Anfield. The two teams are back at the Etihad for this highly anticipated FA Cup quarterfinal.

City beat Arsenal to win the Carabao Cup just before the international break with a tactical masterclass from manager Pep Guardiola. It will give them great confidence, especially in the title race, but their particular tactics in the final (4-2-4 out of possession, overloading the right side) could only work in that matchup.

Against Liverpool, Pep and his players will have to do something else. Guardiola is still trying to figure out his team’s tactics and how best to use Rayan Cherki, while Erling Haaland is going through a worrying patch of form. But City are amazing in cup competitions under Guardiola. Liverpool will have to pull out something special to beat the Citizens.

Arne Slot’s team has struggled for consistency. Mohamed Salah‘s form has been poor all season, and for his final game for Liverpool against City, he will want to do something special. Can he? He has 20 goals and assists against them in his nine seasons with the Reds. Florian Wirtz was outstanding with Germany in two games over the March international break, while Hugo Ekitike shone for France. This bodes well for the current Premier League champions, who face a massive task on Saturday as the discontent among their fans, especially against Slot, grows quickly.

MY PREDICTION: Manchester City 2-1 Liverpool. I don’t think either team is doing great this season so far and both have been so inconsistent but City at home will be hard to beat for this Liverpool side. So I will go for a narrow Citizens’ win.

Barcelona logoWill Atléti ruin Barcelona’s title push?
Atlético Madrid vs. Barcelona

LaLiga, Matchday 30
Kickoff: Saturday, 3 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. GMT

Atlético Madrid cannot win the title anymore; however, they can play a big part in determining who will win it. They were beaten by Real Madrid in the capital derby before the international break at the Bernabeu, and this time, they host Barcelona at the Metropolitano.

Barça have a four-point lead over Real Madrid (with the last Clásico coming up in May at the Camp Nou) but this is a tricky trip for them. They have lost Raphinha for five weeks after he picked up an injury with Brazil during the international break. It is a massive loss for them as he is arguably their best player overall (in and out of possession). Alejandro Baldé, Jules Koundé and Frenkie de Jong are also out. Once more, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick will have to find the right formula with a mixed side.

This clash comes just before the two teams meet again the next two weeks in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals. We saw two amazing games between them in the Copa del Rey semifinals (4-0 win for Atléti at home, 3-0 for the Catalans), and this one should be no different. Atlético are also without some big players. Keeper Jan Oblak is still not back while Johnny Cardoso and Marco Pubill are doubtful and Marcos Llorente is suspended.

In the Copa del Rey first leg, Atlético knew exactly how to exploit Barcelona’s high defensive line, creating numerous chances and putting their opponent under massive pressure. On the other hand, the league leaders will always create lots of chances against anyone, but the absence of Raphinha (who will probably replaced by Marcus Rashford in the starting lineup) will change their creativity.

MY PREDICTION: Atlético Madrid 2-2 Barcelona. This is going to be a very intense, open game as Atlético will want to a repeat of their dominant performance over Barca in the Copa del Rey. But Barcelona will be more prepared this time, even without Raphinha, and should take a point.

Gab & Juls debate whether Barcelona should keep Marcus Rashford for next season.

French Ligue 1, Matchday 28
Kickoff: Sunday, 2:45 p.m. ET / 7:45 p.m. GMT

This game could mean a lot in the fight for European places, but it is first and foremost a massive derby — one of the biggest in France, despite the 200 kilometers between the two cities. It has been a huge rivalry since the Bernard Tapie-Arsène Wenger eras in the 1980s and 90s. There is no love lost between the teams, and it will be even truer on Sunday with only three points separating them in the table.

Marseille are third but their form has been patchy (two wins, one draw and one loss in their last four games in all comps), while Monaco are in sixth place after six league wins in a row, including against Lens, Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon. The Monegasques are the most in-form team in Ligue 1 right now and at home against their archrivals, they will eye a seventh success in a row to continue their incredible push for a top-three finish. Not that long ago, manager Sébastien Pocognoli was under huge pressure, and it looked impossible for his team to make it to third place. But their superb form has changed everything. Their back three is very solid, while forwards Maghnes Akliouche, Folarin Balogun and Aleksandr Golovin are playing well

Marseille’s last-minute loss at home against Lille, another contender for European places, before the international break was a really bad result. This team hasn’t really gotten going since the arrival of Habib Beye on the bench (three wins, three draws in Ligue 1 and a loss in the French Cup). This game is massive for them, as another poor display could see Lyon and Lille (only two points behind them in fourth and fifth) overtake them in the table.

MY PREDICTION: AS Monaco 2-0 Marseille. Mason Greenwood is suspended for Marseille, which will be a huge loss as he is their best player this season. Monaco are full of confidence and have great momentum going into this game; I expect them to be too strong to handle.

Fenerbahce logoBesiktas logoAn Istanbul derby with title implications
Fenerbahçe vs. Besiktas

Turkish Super Lig
Kickoff: Sunday, 1 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. GMT

It’s second vs. fourth in the Istanbul derby between these two giants, but this is a much bigger game for the hosts. Fenerbahçe are four points behind the leaders Galatasaray, who have a game in hand but who travel to Trabzon this weekend to face a Trabzonspor side currently third in the table, level on points with Fener.

Fenerbahçe manager Domenico Tedesco will hope that Gala drop points in their game while his team wins at home against their city rivals. Fener have lost points cheaply lately with a loss at Karagumruk (2-0) and a draw at Antalyaspor (2-2). If they want to win their first league title since 2014, they will have to be perfect. They have finished second for four straight seasons! Marco Asensio and Talisca have been their best players while young Frenchman Sidiki Cherif has already had an impact after arriving in January like N’Golo Kanté and Matteo Guendouzi.

Fenerbahçe have only lost one game all season, but their nine draws are costing them dearly. Galatasaray have two losses but only four draws. Besiktas are far behind, eight points behind Trabzonspor and Fener. They can’t win the title and will qualify for the UEFA Conference League, but they would love to prevent Fenerbahçe from winning the title. They are in good form, too, with six wins out of their last seven games in all competitions, only losing to Galatasaray along the way (1-0) despite a good performance.

Tammy Abraham is still the top goal scorer in the league despite leaving for Aston Villa in January, but Orkun Kökçü will be the key player for the Eagles until the end of the season. He has six goals and six assists so far in the Super Lig and is Besiktas’ most influential player.

MY PREDICTION: Fenerbahce 2-1 Besiktas. I think that despite Besiktas’ good form, this is a crucial game for Fenerbahçe and they won’t miss this opportunity. They will get the win on Sunday at home.

Inter Milan logoAS Roma logoInter need to turn things around — and quickly
Inter Milan vs. AS Roma

Italian Serie A, Matchday 31
Kickoff: Sunday, 2:45 p.m. ET / 7:45 p.m. GMT

Believe it or not, Inter Milan have won only one of their last six games in all competitions. This includes being knocked out of the Champions League by Bodo/Glimt, being beaten by AC Milan in the derby (again) and drawing twice in the row against Atalanta and Fiorentina (both 1-1) after twice taking the lead, too. Inter are misfiring at the worst time of the season, and now Milan are just six points behind them, ready to pounce in case their rivals drop more points.

While Inter play this huge game on Sunday, Milan will travel to Napoli on Monday for a super tough game. At least Inter are at home, where they have only lost twice and drawn twice all season. But they need to recover their best form quickly. The absence of Lautaro Martínez has been the biggest problem for them, and the main reason for their recent poor form. Fortunately for them, Hakan Calhanoglou is finally back in midfield, and he is making the team better instantly.

This is a massive game for Roma, too. They are currently sixth in the table, level on points with Juventus in fifth and just three behind Como in fourth. While we wait to find out if Serie A will have four or five teams in the Champions League next season, Roma need points after a bad run of their own. Apart from beating Lecce (1-0) in the last game before the international break, they had won only one of their previous seven in all competitions. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini is struggling to find form for his team. Roma are struggling to score goals quite often despite the good form of Donyell Malen since joining in January from Aston Villa (seven goals in 10 games in Serie A).

MY PREDICTION: Inter Milan 2-1 AS Roma. I think Inter Milan will get back to winning ways on Sunday. It is a massive game, one they will approach with the mindset of champions.

German Bundesliga, Matchday 28
Kickoff: Saturday, 12:30 p.m ET / 5:30 p.m. GMT

It is third vs. second in the Bundesliga this weekend as Stuttgart host Borussia Dortmund. There are currently eight points between the two teams in the table, so a win for Sebastian Hoeness’s side would bridge the cap to five and give them a chance to try to catch their opponent before the end of the season. Dortmund are still chasing Bayern, but with a nine-point gap and the two Klassikers played already, it looked almost like mission impossible. So Niko Kovac and his team can focus on securing second place.

Apart from the loss against Bayern a month ago, Dortmund have been excellent for a while now with nine wins and just one draw (at Leipzig) in their 10 games besides the Bayern match. The only two games they have lost this season so far have been against Bayern, and they are unbeaten against the rest of the league. Dortmund’s defense, the second best in the league, just behind Bayern’s, will be put to the test by this Stuttgart team with great attacking potential.

At 29, Deniz Undav has become one of the best strikers in the league, with 18 goals already. He has been unstoppable lately with 11 goals and seven assists in his last 15 games in all competitions with his club. Undav has been on fire and even scored for Germany during the international break. It will be a great battle against Dortmund’s prolific No. 9: Sehrou Guirassy, who has 13 goals this season. More importantly, Guirassy has scored eight times (and provided one assist) in his last 10 games in all competitions for Dortmund.

MY PREDICTION: Stuttgart 2-2 Dortmund. I think this will be a high-scoring game between two teams that have in-form goal scorers. Stuttgart are not guaranteed a Champions League place yet, but a win on Saturday would increase their chances massively; I just don’t expect BVB to let them get it.

Protecting Your Digital Assets

The rise of cryptocurrency has introduced a new frontier for investors and individuals who wish to manage their finances in the digital sphere. However, along with its advantages, cryptocurrency also presents numerous security concerns that need to be addressed in order to protect your digital assets.

Understanding the Risks

As you step into the world of cryptocurrency, it’s crucial to be aware of the different types of security risks that exist:

  • Hacking: Cryptocurrency exchanges and wallets can be targeted by hackers seeking to steal funds.
  • Phishing Attacks: Individuals may receive fake emails or messages that mimic legitimate services, tricking them into revealing sensitive information.
  • Malware: Software designed to infiltrate your device can silently log your keystrokes or access your personal information.
  • Social Engineering: Attackers may manipulate individuals into sharing confidential information through deceptive tactics.
  • Losing Access: Unlike traditional banks, losing your wallet’s private key means losing access to your assets forever.

Protecting Your Digital Assets

While the risks are significant, there are several measures you can take to secure your cryptocurrency holdings:

  • Use Hardware Wallets: Investing in a hardware wallet can help keep your digital assets offline and away from potential cyber threats.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Always activate 2FA on your accounts to add an additional layer of security.
  • Be Wary of Phishing: Verify the authenticity of any communication before sharing sensitive details.
  • Regular Software Updates: Ensure your devices and applications are regularly updated to avoid vulnerabilities.
  • Educate Yourself: Stay informed about the latest security practices and threats in the cryptocurrency space.

    Understanding Digital Assets

Digital assets include anything stored electronically that holds value. This can range from social media accounts and cloud-stored files to financial tools such as online banking accounts and cryptocurrency wallets. As technology evolves, so do the methods used by cybercriminals to exploit vulnerabilities.

    Common Threats to Digital Security

Cyber threats come in many forms, including phishing scams, malware attacks, ransomware, and identity theft. Hackers often target weak passwords, outdated software, or unsecured networks to gain access to sensitive information. Cryptocurrency holders, in particular, are frequent targets due to the decentralized and often irreversible nature of transactions.

    Best Practices for Protection

To safeguard your digital assets, consider implementing these key strategies:

    • Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Avoid using the same password across multiple platforms. A password manager can help generate and store complex passwords securely.
    • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Adding an extra layer of security significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access.
    • Keep Software Updated: Regular updates ensure that security vulnerabilities are patched promptly.
    • Secure Your Internet Connection: Use trusted networks and consider a Virtual Private Network (VPN) when accessing sensitive information.
    • Backup Important Data: Regular backups can help you recover your information in case of a cyberattack or system failure.

    Protecting Cryptocurrency Investments

If you invest in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, additional precautions are necessary. Use hardware wallets for long-term storage, keep private keys offline, and avoid sharing sensitive information. Always verify the authenticity of platforms before making transactions.

Conclusion

As cryptocurrency continues to gain popularity, understanding and addressing security concerns is more important than ever. By taking proactive steps to protect your digital assets, you can navigate the world of cryptocurrency with greater confidence and peace of mind.

Ultimate Series Showdown: Preview, Predictions & Insights

Well, that series against the Yankees exposed some of the lingering issues with the Mariners roster, as currently constructed. Left-handed pitching is going to be a huge problem for this extremely lefty-heavy lineup throughout the season, and there really isn’t much relief in sight — J.P. Crawford is back from his brief IL stint but bats left-handed and newly-extended Cole Emerson does too. It’s very early days so we shouldn’t put much stock into just seven games. Anyway, I’m sure this lineup will start hitting a bit better as soon as they hit the road. Speak of the devil Angels. The Mariners embark on the first road trip of the season with stops in Anaheim and Arlington.

It’s so hard to parse who the Angels believe themselves to be. Are they trying to win? Gambling on bounce back seasons from guys like Grayson Rodriguez, Alek Manoah, and Josh Lowe isn’t a terrible idea if they’re looking to uncover some undervalued players but none of them are impact players in 2026. Are they building for the future? Signing four relievers with an average age of 36 and carrying Adam Frazier on the Opening Day roster instead of top prospect Christian Moore sends the wrong message. In an era where front office decision making has largely been homogenized by analytics, the Angels stand out as an outlier in the worst way possible. It’s easy to rag on them because things are so bleak for the franchise, but also, things are dire in Anaheim. Do you think the visitor’s clubhouse has air conditioning?

For a brief moment during the first weekend of the season, Mike Trout was leading all of baseball in fWAR. He had a fantastic opening series against Houston, blasting two home runs, collecting six hits, and even stealing a bag. Then, he went hitless in three games against the Cubs to start this week. Zach Neto and Jo Adell are two of the most important players for the Angels’ future. The former has quietly developed into one of the best young shortstops in baseball over the last few years while the latter finally broke out last season after years of stalled development. Nolan Schanuel could be a core piece of the future if he could ever figure out how to hit for just a little more power. His bat-to-ball skills give him a decent floor, but right now, he’s profiling a bit too much like Casey Kochman.

Last year, the Angels moved Reid Detmers to the bullpen and he wound up seeing some high leverage work by the end of the season. Perhaps it was out of frustration with his slow development path despite possessing above average stuff, but that experiment lasted one season because a talented starter — even an inconsistent one like Detmers — is always going to be more valuable than a back-end reliever. If there’s one thing that he’ll carry forward from his time in the ‘pen, it’s a more aggressive approach that leans heavily on his two fantastic breaking balls to put batters away. He’s also added a splitter to his repertoire this spring in the hopes that it gives him a weapon to keep right-handed batters at bay.

There’s a pretty serious disconnect between Jack Kochanowicz’s high velocity and extremely miniscule strikeout rate. Sure, he throws a sinker as his primary fastball, but his entire repertoire is simply too hittable. It’s really not a good thing when each of your pitches has an expected wOBA over .350. And when he pitches in the zone, batters run a contact rate over 90%, an outrageously high rate. That has forced him to start pitching out of the zone more often, but his secondary pitches just aren’t optimized to earn swings and misses. It’s a vicious cycle where his arsenal isn’t good enough to overpower batters, but not deceptive enough to get them to chase. Without those strikeouts, we’re left with a groundball specialist who doesn’t have great command and allows way too many balls in play. It’s not a great profile.

Ryan Johnson is a perfect encapsulation of everything wrong with the Angels current player development philosophy. He was drafted in the second round in 2024 after dominating in college ball at Dallas Baptist. He made the Opening Day roster in 2025 as a reliever, skipping the minor leagues entirely. After a month and a half and a 7.36 ERA, the Angels pulled the plug and sent him to High-A to continue his development as a starter. He made 12 starts in the minors and looked really good. Fast forward a year and Johnson had a solid, but not outstanding, spring training and Los Angeles opted to start the season with Johnson on the big league roster again. His first start of the season did not go well; he lasted just 3.1 innings against the Cubs, allowing six runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out just two. It’s really too bad because Johnson has a really intriguing profile, and obviously has some raw talent, but the games the Angels have played with his development pathway have really hurt his ability to grow.

The Astros swept the Red Sox earlier this week, pushing their early season win streak to five games. They’ll travel to Sacramento this weekend, starting a long road trip that culminates in Seattle next week. The A’s offense has started the season in a huge funk, but maybe returning to the friendly confines of Sutter Health Park will give them the spark they need. The Rangers won their series against Baltimore and will open up their home slate with a series against the Reds this weekend.

Konnor Griffin Shines in Pirates’ Home Opener MLB Debut

Widely considered a five-tool player, Konnor Griffin slashed .438/.571/.625 in his five games this season with Triple-A Indianapolis before getting the callup to the big leagues. In 122 games last year, he hit .333 with 21 home runs, 94 RBIs and 65 stolen bases en route to being named Baseball America’s Minor League Player of the Year. The shortstop was the ninth overall selection in the 2024 MLB Draft.

Griffin, who doesn’t turn 20 years old until April 24, is the first teenaged position player in MLB since Juan Soto debuted with Washington in 2018. He’s also the first teenager to debut for Pittsburgh since Aramis Ramirez in 1998.

Here’s a breakdown of his MLB debut, at-bat by at-bat:

From the very first inning, Griffin demonstrated why he has been one of the most talked-about prospects in baseball. His presence at the plate was confident and controlled, as he recorded multiple hits and drove in crucial runs that helped set the tone for the game. Fans at PNC Park quickly rallied behind the young star, sensing they were witnessing the beginning of something special.

Defensively, Griffin was just as impressive. Whether it was his quick reactions, strong arm, or smart positioning, he played a key role in maintaining the Pirates’ momentum throughout the game. His all-around performance reflected a player who is not only skilled but also prepared for the demands of Major League Baseball.

The Pirates, who are looking to build a competitive roster for the future, may have found a cornerstone player in Griffin. His debut performance injected energy into the team and offered fans a glimpse of a promising new era.

While it is only the beginning of his MLB journey, Griffin’s opening-day heroics have already set high expectations. If this performance is any indication, Konnor Griffin could quickly become a key figure for the Pittsburgh Pirates and one of the league’s rising stars.

FIRST AT-BAT, SECOND INNING

Slotted in as the seventh hitter in the Bucs’ lineup, Griffin had to wait for his chance to step into the batter’s box, but he made an early impact with his glove, turning an inning-ending double play on a Jeremiah Jackson grounder up the middle in the top of the second.

In the bottom half of the frame, Griffin got to swing the lumber, launching an RBI double to the gap in left-center field on an 1-2 curveball — earning a loud ovation from the crowd as the Pirates took a 1-0 lead. Before they had time to settle, Griffin was sliding into home plate on a Jared Triolo single, scoring the first run of his MLB career to double the advantage.
