Gemini 6-participant

Community observing program Shadow the Scientists took the public on a second tour of the famous interstellar visitor with live observations from the Gemini North telescope control room in Hawai‘i

12 December 2025

Gemini North captured new images of Comet 3I/ATLAS after it reemerged from behind the Sun on its path out of the Solar System. The data were collected during a Shadow the Scientists session — a unique outreach initiative that invites students around the world to join researchers as they observe the Universe on the world’s most advanced telescopes.

On 26 November 2025, scientists used the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) on Gemini North at Maunakea in Hawai‘i to obtain images of the third-ever detected interstellar object, Comet 3I/ATLAS. The new observations reveal how the comet has changed after making its closest approach to the Sun. Gemini North is one half of the International Gemini Observatory, partly funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and operated by NSF NOIRLab.

After emerging from behind the Sun, 3I/ATLAS reappeared in the sky close to Zaniah, a triple-star system located in the constellation Virgo. These observations were taken as part of a public outreach initiative organized by NSF NOIRLab in collaboration with Shadow the Scientists, an initiative created to connect the public with scientists to engage in authentic scientific experiments, such as astronomy observing experiences on world-class telescopes [1]. The scientific program was led by Bryce Bolin, a research scientist from Eureka Scientific.

This image is composed of exposures taken through four filters — blue, green, orange, and red. As exposures are taken, the comet remains fixed in the center of the telescope’s field of view. However, the positions of the background stars change relative to the comet, causing them to appear as colorful streaks in the final image.

In earlier images of the comet, captured during a Shadow the Scientists session hosted at Gemini South in Chile, it appears to have a red hue. However, in the new image released today, it appears to have a faint greenish glow. This is due to light emitted by gases in the comet’s coma that are evaporating as the comet heats up, including diatomic carbon (C2), a highly reactive molecule of two carbon atoms that emits light at green wavelengths.

What remains unknown is how the comet will behave as it leaves the Sun’s vicinity and cools down. Many comets have a delayed reaction in experiencing the Sun’s heat due to the lag in time that it takes for heat to make its way through the interior of the comet. A delay can activate the evaporation of new chemicals or trigger a comet outburst. Gemini will continue to monitor the comet as it leaves the Solar System and detect changes in its gas composition and outburst behavior.

This collaboration with Shadow the Scientists builds on NOIRLab’s tradition of combining cutting-edge science with public engagement, ensuring that remarkable cosmic events are shared as widely as possible. By involving learners directly in observing sessions and data collection [2], programs like this one not only advance knowledge but also inspire the next generation of explorers.

“Sharing an observing experience in some of the best conditions available gives the public a truly front-row view of our interstellar visitor,” says Bolin. “Allowing the public to see what we do as astronomers and how we do it also helps demystify the scientific and data collection process, adding transparency to our study of this fascinating object.”

AI in Healthcare: Revolutionizing Patient Care One Algorithm at a Time

AI in Healthcare: Revolutionizing Patient Care One Algorithm at a Time

The advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has initiated a paradigm shift in numerous sectors, but few have been as profoundly affected as healthcare. From diagnostic algorithms to patient management systems, AI is poised to transform the landscape of patient care as we know it.

The Promise of AI in Healthcare

AI technology offers the ability to process vast amounts of data and identify patterns that may elude even the most seasoned healthcare professionals. Some key areas where AI is making significant contributions include:

    • Predictive Analytics: By analyzing historical data, AI can predict patient outcomes and help in early diagnosis.
    • Personalized Treatment Plans: AI algorithms can tailor treatments based on a patient’s genetic makeup and medical history.
    • Operational Efficiency: AI streamlines administrative tasks, reducing paperwork and allowing healthcare professionals to focus more on patient care.
    • Remote Patient Monitoring: AI-powered devices can monitor patients’ health in real-time and alert doctors to any concerning changes.

Transformative Applications of AI

Numerous applications of AI are already in practice, demonstrating its potential to revolutionize patient care:

1. Diagnostic Imaging

AI algorithms have shown impressive accuracy in analyzing medical images such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans. For instance, deep learning techniques can help detect abnormalities like tumors with high specificity and sensitivity.

2. Virtual Health Assistants

AI chatbots and virtual assistants are increasingly being employed to triage patients, providing information and support outside typical office hours. These tools can answer common health queries, schedule appointments, and even remind patients to take their medications.

3. Drug Discovery

The pharmaceutical industry benefits immensely from AI’s ability to analyze biological data and predict how different compounds might behave. This can drastically reduce the time and costs associated with bringing new drugs to market.

Challenges and Ethical Considerations

Despite the advantages, the integration of AI in healthcare does come with challenges:

    • Data Privacy: Protecting patient data is paramount, requiring strict compliance with regulations such as HIPAA.
    • Bias in Algorithms: AI systems are only as good as the data they are trained on. Biased data can lead to inequitable care.
    • Acceptance by Healthcare Providers: Some practitioners may be skeptical of AI, fearing it could replace their roles rather than enhance their decision-making processes.

Conclusion

AI is already having a tremendous impact on healthcare, revolutionizing the diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases. As technology continues to evolve, it will be essential for stakeholders to address ethical considerations and work collaboratively to ensure the successful integration of AI into everyday practice. The future of healthcare is undoubtedly intelligent, and with careful deployment, AI can lead to a healthier world.

New England Storm: Boston Braces for Snowy Weather

Western Massachusetts and Northern New England have seen plenty of early-season snow, but Boston is still waiting for its first measurable accumulation. This could change by late Saturday as a weak but quick-moving coastal storm veers close enough to bring scattered to steady light snow overnight Saturday into early Sunday afternoon — potentially affecting fans planning to attend the Patriots-Bills game at Gillette Stadium.

Snowfall will be brief, but still impactful enough for winter weather advisories across most of Southeastern Massachusetts, the Cape, Rhode Island, and southern Connecticut. Roads will be slippery, especially Sunday morning.

Here are the latest forecast snowfall totals for the region. Some snow could start falling from 10 p.m. to midnight:

• Coating to 1 inch — Parts of the North Shore near the New Hampshire border, west along Route 2 to the Berkshires; coastal and southern New Hampshire and southern Vermont.

• 1 to 3 inches — Greater Boston west to the Berkshires, along and south of the Mass Pike, Southeastern Massachusetts, Outer Cape, inland Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

• 3 to 4 inches — South Coast of Mass., coastal Rhode Island, most of Cape Cod, and the islands.

These maps provide further storm details:

Chloe Fineman’s Exclusive 4 A.M. Bedtime Routine After SNL

NEED TO KNOW

  • Chloe Fineman is lifting the veil on her bedtime routine after Saturday Night Live
  • “It’s always in a haze at four in the morning,” the comedian exclusively tells PEOPLE
  • The SNL star recently partnered with Moxy Hotels for a cheeky bedtime story series for the holiday season

Chloe Fineman is committed to her bedtime routine — even after late Saturday nights.

The Saturday Night Live star tells PEOPLE what her nighttime routine looks like after a show day. Fineman, 37, notes she typically finishes her Saturdays in the wee hours and admits she often forgets to brush her teeth.

“Lately, I’ve been really good about the teeth, but that was a new thing I had to really remember to do,” Fineman says. “[My routine is] usually oil wiping off my face, but then usually waking up with eyelashes in the bed. It’s always in a haze at four in the morning.”

Fans can now include the comedian in their bedtime routine. Fineman teamed up with Moxy Hotels in the United States and Canada for a cheeky guest experience where guests can pick up their room phones to hear the star’s bedtime stories.

For her “Call for a Bedtime Story” series, Fineman wrote and recorded three nighttime tales for Moxy’s first celebrity “Bedtime Stories” partnership. The comedic stories incorporate Fineman’s personality and various impressions.

“The idea of having fun, cheeky bedtime stories that are all about the holiday staycation, something I am very passionate about, was a perfect partnership,” Fineman says. “I already do [staycations] myself, so it’s true.”

She adds, “It was just this really funny way to have these little bedtime stories that you can get at any Moxy hotel in the country. You just pick up a phone, hear my voice.”

“I don’t know if I’m relaxing, but hopefully [I’m] entertaining,” she jokes.

The comedian notes she started to do staycations to avoid the chaos of the holiday season about two years ago, and used that as inspiration for her story, “The Staycation.”

“It came about from my own experience of the holidays, of it just kind of being a lot,” she says. “I am from San Francisco, and so you’re on the plane, and it’s delayed, and then you get there, and then you fight with your sister, and then your mom is asking all this stuff, and then your cousin comes. And so I have really employed staycations during the holiday season. I started that two years ago.”

Fineman made sure to include her furry friend in her bedtime poem, “Merry Peachmas” — “a roiling poem dedicated to diva Shiba Inu, Peaches, and her standoff with Aunt Debby’s Persian cat Mildew,” per the press release. “My muse is always my dog Peach,” she says.

The actress says she hopes people can “relate and laugh and not feel alone in the holiday chaos” with her bedtime stories and are inspired to “treat themselves to that staycation.”

Fineman’s bedtime stories can also help people fall asleep — something the star says she struggles with. “I’m a big nap person and I don’t think you can really get around sleep, unfortunately,” she says.

“We’ve solved a lot in the world and can get things delivered by AI, but we got to figure out sleep,” Fineman continues. “It’s the one thing you can’t cheat, and I’ve tried Celsius, I’ve tried it all, so I nap. And if I don’t get a lot of sleep, I’ll catch up the next day.”

And while Saturdays are for the late-night show, Fineman says Sundays are for self-care. The comedian explains that during SNL’s season, Sundays are typically her off days and are reserved for some TLC (tender loving care).

“It is a self-care Sunday. I’m a big fan of foot massages,” Fineman notes. “A foot massage is great. You can be on your phone, you could read, you could talk on the phone. That is the ultimate solution. I think it’s good for you.”

Aside from a good foot rub, the actress spends her day off with a good decluttering or a binge-worthy show. Fineman says she recently marathoned All’s Fair, Hulu’s newest legal drama, to which she can only say, “Jaw to the floor.”

Weather Forecast and Projected Totals – NBC New York

New York City’s first accumulating snow is looking like a near certainty this weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for New York City, Long Island and much of Central and South New Jersey for Saturday night into Sunday morning.

It won’t be a blockbuster snow event, but snow lovers should be delighted nonetheless. In the city, people will wake up Sunday morning to around two inches of fresh snow on the ground. Expect less farther inland and more on eastern Long Island and down the Jersey Shore.

Highest totals will be around 4 inches or so, with isolated higher amounts.

So when does it all start?

Precipitation from the storm moves in late Saturday evening and could start as rain at the immediate coast.  Saturday temperatures will be above freezing. But temperatures will quickly dip to freezing or slightly below overnight, when the brunt of the precipitation falls, and that means it will change over to snow.

Don’t be surprised to see a crisp layer of white outside your window when waking up Sunday morning!

Typically, New York City gets its first measurable snow sometime during the second week of December, so Sunday morning’s snow is right on schedule.

The last measurable snow in NYC was on Feb. 20, 2025 — almost 300 days ago! The last inch of snow on record was a little over a week before that, on Feb. 11.

Temperatures will largely remain below freezing into early next week, so whatever snow does accumulate, it’ll stick around for everyone to enjoy for at least a couple of days before we hit a warm spell and the snow melts away.

Ubisoft Reimagines Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is the full name of Ubisoft’s piratical remake that’s had more leaks than a sunken ship.

The game’s new title is now visible on the PEGI European ratings board website, which is about as official as it gets. (The game is rated 18 for violence and bad language.)

Additionally, there’s a mention here that Black Flag Resynced will include the ability to make in-game purchases. It’s still unknown how Resynced will plug into the franchise’s existing Animus Hub, which lets you buy optional cosmetic content. Alternatively, this could potentially signify the ability to buy DLC further down the line. Is the game’s memorable Freedom Cry add-on in line for a remake, too?

Today’s development comes just a couple of weeks after the game’s release date was reportedly spilled online. During Ubisoft’s latest financial results the French publisher laid out a slate of upcoming games set to arrive before the end of its current financial year, on March 31, 2026.

The name of one of these games was left as “unannounced”, though a subsequent report by Insider Gaming stated that this not-so-mysterious project was the new version of Black Flag, which is scheduled to arrive during the week of March 23, 2026.

Despite years of internal leaks, fan speculation and even hints from the original game’s lead actor, Ubisoft still has yet to officially confirm its Black Flag remake exists. IGN has contacted the company again today, in case it has anything it wants to tease. Or, perhaps we’ll hear more at The Game Awards later this week?

Previous reports have suggested Black Flag Resynced will be a substantial remake of the series’ beloved piratical entry, with visual and gameplay upgrades that see the game closer in quality to this year’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

New story content will reportedly be added to flesh out more of hero Edward Kenway’s life, though the game’s modern day gameplay sections have apparently been excised — something that many fans aren’t happy about. It will be interesting to see how Ubisoft handles the game’s new ending — which previously tied together story elements from its historical and modern day narratives — in light of that change.

BP Medication Recall: Possible Contamination Found

Dec. 6, 2025, 11:20 a.m. ET

Thousands of bottles of a commonly used prescription drug to treat hypertension has been recalled for possible contamination with another drug.

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Inc., which has U.S. headquarters in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, has recalled multiple lots of bisoprolol fumarate and hydrochlorothiazide tablets (brand name Ziac), because the tablets may have been cross contaminated with other products, according to a recall report published online by the Food and Drug Administration.

The global drug maker, which is headquartered in Mumbai, India, said testing of reserve samples showed presence of traces of ezetimibe, a cholesterol drug the company also produces, according to the recall, posted Dec. 1.

The FDA classified the recall with a Class III risk level, which suggests “use of or exposure to a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences,” according to the agency.

Bisoprolol/hydrochlorothiazide blocks beta-1 receptors in your heart, allowing the heart to beat normally, according to WebMD. The drug also increases urination to remove sodium and water from the body, as well as relaxes blood vessels – to help lower blood pressure and help to reduce heart attack and stroke risk.

What blood pressure medicine is being recalled?

The recall involves an undeclared number of lots of tablets, from 2.5 mg to 6.25 mg dosages, in various sized bottles, manufactured in Madhya Pradesh, India for Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, Inc., USA.

These lots were recalled:

  • 30-tablet bottles, NDC-68462-878-30. Lot 17232401, exp. 11/2025.
  • 100-tablet bottles, NDC-68462-878-01. Lot 17232401, exp. 11/2025.
  • 500-tablet bottles, NDC-68462-878-05. Lots 17232401, exp. 11/2025 and 17240974, exp. 05/2026.

USA TODAY has reached out to Glenmark Pharmaceuticals. Neither Glenmark nor the FDA have issued guidance on what to do with the recalled tablets.

But according to GoodRx, anyone affected by a drug recall is advised to check their medication’s lot number, contact their pharmacist as well as their prescriber and throw away the recalled medication.
