James Gunn on whether The Flash and Wonder Woman were canon in Peacemaker

When co-host Steve Agee noted that kids in a Season 1 classroom scene mention the two heroes, James Gunn responded, “Yeah, are they canon? I don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see. I mean, they’ll exist eventually. Whether they exist now, I don’t know.”

This marked his first official comment on the DCU’s present-day Flash since the reboot began. Gunn had previously revealed that Ezra Miller’s Flash cameo in the Season 1 finale, alongside the Justice League, was not DCU canon.

In the DCEU, The Flash (2023) marked the character’s final film before the DCU relaunch. The DCU has already teased a new speedster through a Max Mercury mural in Superman and introduced its first live-action Superman, played by David Corenswet. Gunn had said earlier that neither Flash nor Aquaman would appear in the DCU for at least two years. This gap allows space between their DCEU portrayals and future DCU debuts.

Regarding Wonder Woman, Gunn’s remarks suggest she will appear in the DCU but may differ from the DCEU’s long-lived Themysciran warrior. A Wonder Woman project is in development under Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios leadership.

Separately, a rumor from scooper @MyTimeToShineH claims the Season 1 Justice League cameo will be replaced in Peacemaker Season 2 with the Justice Gang, first seen in Superman (2025). In the reshot version, Mister Terrific, Superman, Supergirl, Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl appear, with only the latter two fully visible. The exchange between Aquaman and Flash is replaced by a gag involving Peacemaker, Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl.

Peacemaker Season 2 features returning cast members John Cena, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, and Danielle Brooks. It premieres August 21, 2025, on HBO Max.
