IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa City Police say they are investigating an apparent shooting near the University of Iowa campus Friday afternoon.
Police say witnesses reported hearing gunfire near the intersection of East Burlington and South Governor Streets around 1:30 pm Friday. Officers also found evidence of gunfire at the scene.
The University of Iowa issued a Hawk Alert because of the reports of shots fired near campus. That alert reported a suspect running west away from the scene, in the direction of campus. It urged students to avoid the area or shelter in place.
Police are investigating a shooting that occurred near the University of Iowa campus late Friday night, prompting a swift response from law enforcement and campus security.
According to authorities, officers were called to the area following reports of gunfire near downtown Iowa City, close to the university grounds. When police arrived, they found at least one person suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, though their condition has not yet been released.
The area surrounding the incident was temporarily blocked off as investigators collected evidence and interviewed witnesses. Police have not released any details about possible suspects or motives behind the shooting.
University officials have urged students and residents to remain cautious and follow safety alerts issued through the campus emergency notification system.
