Packers discussed Trey Hendrickson trade with Bengals before Micah Parsons deal with Cowboys

Parsons, by the way, is expected to make his debut for the Packers on Sunday against the Lions, sources say, despite a facet joint sprain in his back that left him limited in practice this week and questionable on Friday’s injury report.

It won’t be a full compliment of plays, however, and Parsons likely will focus on rushing the passer (as opposed to moving around the defense). There will be a ramp-up period to make sure when he does play fully and is integrated, his body is ready.

The Packers have been thrilled with Parsons’ contributions already, viewing him as a smart, savvy player whose leadership and effort are evident.

Before executing their blockbuster trade for Micah Parsons, the Green Bay Packers explored acquiring another elite pass rusher: Cincinnati Bengals’ Trey Hendrickson. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Packers were among the most active teams engaging with the Bengals about a potential Hendrickson trade during the offseason. Green Bay even made an initial offer for the NFL’s sack leader from the previous season.

Hendrickson, who led the NFL in sacks in 2024 with 17.5, had been granted permission by the Bengals to seek a trade in March 2025. However, Cincinnati ultimately chose to retain him, restructuring his contract to increase his 2025 salary to a maximum of $30 million. Wikipedia

Despite the Packers’ interest, the Bengals were reportedly unwilling to part with Hendrickson unless defensive tackle Kenny Clark was included in the deal. This scenario unfolded shortly before the Packers finalized a trade with the Dallas Cowboys on August 28, sending Clark and two first-round picks to Dallas in exchange for Parsons. Following the trade, Green Bay signed Parsons to a four-year, $188 million extension, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history at the time.

In his Packers debut against the Detroit Lions on September 7, 2025, Parsons made an immediate impact, recording a sack in a 27–13 victory. The Packers’ decision to pivot from Hendrickson to Parsons has significantly bolstered their pass-rushing unit, positioning them as formidable contenders in the NFC.

Landing Parsons’ was the Packers’ No. 1 goal this offseason, despite so many times when it seemed far-fetched. Green Bay views Parsons as a generational player, and the trade compensation — two first-round picks and Clark — shows that. It’s why they were willing to deal Clark — because of the player they were getting back in Parsons.

Parsons spoke to reporters this week and glowed about his initiation impressions of Green Bay.

“I’ve never been in a locker room with guys like this,” Parsons said on Thursday. “I came in Tuesday for treatment, and I saw almost every guy in the locker room. This is the first time I’ve ever seen this. That shows just how much these guys want to be here. … They just want to be around each other and hang out. That’s important to have guys that want to come into the building. When you’re around guys like that, it makes it exciting to come to work.”
