Roman Anthony’s back might be acting up again.
He exited the Red Sox’ game against the Guardians on Tuesday night after striking out in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Following a swing and miss at Slade Cecconi’s curveball down and in, Anthony seemed to immediately grab at his lower back/left side. Then he did it twice more on his walk back to the dugout.
In the top of the fifth, Nate Eaton replaced Anthony in right field.
Anthony missed two games in early August because of what the team described as mid-back tightness.
A 21-year-old rookie whose arrival in June coincided with the Sox turning around their season, Anthony has emerged as a stalwart at the top of the lineup, including batting leadoff against Cleveland. He finished 1 for 3 with an RBI single.
In a concerning moment during Wednesday night’s matchup, Roman Anthony, the Red Sox infielder, exited the game after appearing to experience discomfort in his back. The incident occurred in the middle of the second inning when Anthony suddenly grabbed at his back/left side while attempting a defensive play.
The Red Sox medical staff quickly attended to Anthony on the field before he was replaced in the lineup. The team has not yet released a detailed statement regarding the severity of the injury or the expected recovery timeline.
Anthony, who has been a key contributor for Boston this season, expressed disappointment at leaving the game early but reassured fans that he would undergo evaluation to determine the next steps. “It’s always frustrating to leave the field like that,” Anthony said. “I’ll get checked out and do whatever I can to get back as soon as possible.”
The Red Sox, who are in the midst of a tight division race, now face uncertainty regarding Anthony’s availability in the coming games. Manager Alex Cora commented, “We’ll assess him fully with our medical team. Player health is our top priority, and we’ll make decisions based on what’s best for him and the team.”
Fans and analysts alike are keeping a close eye on updates, as Anthony’s presence in the lineup has been pivotal for Boston both offensively and defensively this season.
The team is expected to provide further information after Anthony undergoes additional testing, and a possible timeline for his return could be shared in the next 24 to 48 hours.
