Indianapolis 500 Qualifying Weekend Weather Outlook

7

More on than off with showers and storms on Saturday versus muggier, hotter Sunday.

INDIANAPOLIS —

Improving weather Fast Friday afternoon

The forecast for Fast Friday is playing out as expected with an area of rain quickly departing on schedule with the bulk of the precipitation expected heading toward Ohio. This obviously delayed the start of practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but the drying process and some increasing sunshine will allow for plenty of laps this afternoon. Highs near 70°, if not above it in some spots, and the evening should be rather pleasant.

Qualifying Saturday: Rain and storms likely

We are still expecting an increasingly humid air mass to arrive over the weekend, and that process will trigger scattered, to at times numerous, showers and thunderstorms around on Saturday. It’s fair game anywhere and anytime for downpours and/or storms to develop due to many boundaries interacting with upper air disturbances and increasingly moist air.

There is a chance a few storms could be severe, and depending on their movement, impacts to qualifying are expected on Saturday. Be prepared for delays, and will have to wait and see how great the coverage is and how quickly it ends.

Qualifying Sunday: Humid heat, slight storm chance

We’re still going with only isolated rain/storm chances on Sunday with higher temperatures in the middle and upper 80s and heat indices possibly near if not above 90° as the muggy air gets entrenched.

Unsettled weather Monday – Wednesday of next week with a daily chance of rain and storms before a cool front delivers pleasant air for Thursday and Carb Day. It’s still a week away, and we will obviously monitor model trends for next Friday, but the early call is for sunshine in low 70s. Hopefully, that does not change much between now and then. Check back for updates over the weekend as we narrow down specifics.
