WASHINGTON (TNND) — Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy gets flack on the social media platform, X after he seemed to applaud Iranian ships evading the U.S. blockade.
On Monday evening, Murphy shared a post that was captioned, “At least 26 Iranian shadow fleet vessels bypass US blockade.”
Murphy shared the post and captioned it, “awesome.”
Murphy said that the post was sarcastic following the backlash.
“Ok Twitter, I can’t believe I need to clarify this but obviously Trump’s bungled mismanagement of this war is not ‘awesome,'” he wrote on X. “As I have said a million times here, it’s a disaster and he should end the war immediately. My tweet was something called “sarcasm”.
There has been tension between the U.S. and Iran due to the condition of the Strait of Hormuz amid the ceasefire.
Last week, Iran’s foreign minister declared the straight was open. However, a day later the U.S. blockade of Iranian shipping went into full effect outside the strait and Iranians fired what looked like warning shots at foreign vessels that tried to go through.
The U.S. Navy also stopped an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel that tried to evade the blockade.
Murphy got pushback on X for his tweet that appeared to be supporting Iran.
“A sitting U.S. Senator is actively rooting for Iran,” the prominent account Libs of TikTok wrote on X. “Crazy as hell. TRAITOR.”
