Severe Weather Alert: Heavy Rain, Strong Winds, and Hazardous Surf Expected Sunday

7

South Florida is dealing with a stretch of hazardous weather today, with dangerous surf, strong winds, and periods of heavy rain impacting much of the region as a result of a cold front moving over the area.

Along the Atlantic coast, conditions at the beach are especially risky. Large waves of 10 to 14 feet are expected offshore, creating dangerous surf and a high risk of rip currents, powerful flows of water that can quickly pull swimmers away from shore. These conditions make entering the ocean unsafe for both swimmers and boaters.

Winds are also picking up across the region. Gusts near 30 mph are expected for most areas, with stronger gusts up to 35 mph possible along the east coast. The windiest conditions are expected through the morning and early afternoon. There is a wind advisory in effect until 4 p.m.

Rain is becoming more widespread as a front settles into South Florida. Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms will continue through today, with some periods of heavier rainfall possible. In metro areas along the southeast coast, repeated rounds of rain could lead to localized street flooding, especially in areas with poor drainage.

Rainfall totals will vary, but some locations could see around half an inch to an inch of rain, with isolated higher amounts possible where heavier showers persist.

Conditions won’t change much tonight into Monday. Breezy winds will continue, and showers will remain in the forecast, especially during the afternoon hours. Temperatures will stay slightly cooler along the east coast, with highs in the upper 70s.

Looking ahead to the rest of the week, winds will gradually ease, but a few passing showers may still develop at times. Temperatures will trend warmer, with inland areas potentially reaching the upper 80s to near 90 degrees later in the week.
